Description: T'nom saves a fellow wingmate from disaster and gets noticed by N'vanik OOC - a bit late just because I was LOA for most of May!!
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 10, day 3 of Turn 9
Taldeth turned back for another mouthful of firestone. T'nom tossed it
straight into the gaping maw of the bronze dragon. He immediately
turned and began scoring the Thread that continued to fall. He had a
few younger riders flying near him, one of whom had had some trouble
in the recent drills. T'nom continued to keep an eye on both the
Thread and the riders around him.
Lulorth was a little too eager to prove herself in the prestigious
Weyrleader's Wing and Merefin had some trouble holding her back and
keeping her in formation. **We can't chase every clump of Thread! We
have to stay in position.**
Lulorth grumbled as she watched a few strands fall just outside of her
range. The green beside her shifted to flame it. }:I could have gotten
that.:{
**But it was in _her_ area. If you go too far it breaks formation.
Please stay focused!** Flying with deadly things falling all around
her was bad enough without trying to keep her dragon in control.
}:I fly! I fight!:{ Lulorth dove to attack a clump of Thread that was
well outside of her range.
Taldeth continued to fire at the Thread that was falling. T'nom caught
sight of the weyrling pair edging up in the formation. He frowned and
wondered why they were slightly forward from their position. He knew
they were new to the wing and made a mental note to keep aware of the
pair.
**Down, Taldeth. That clump got through the ranks.** He motioned to
those around him of his intentions and the pair dipped down to catch
the falling Thread. He felt the winds pull at them as they changed
direction. With a few extra pumps of his wings, Taldeth reached the
Thread and flamed it from the sky.
}:I flamed it well:{ Lulorth said as climbed back to take her place.
**But you left _our_ position open. Thread could have gotten through.**
}:It did not,:{ she said with frustrating dragonic simplicity.
Taldeth and T'nom returned to their position even as the wind began to
pick up around them.
**Storms brewing,** he thought, but until they could be certain, they
must continue the fight.
**Easy now, Taldeth, try and use the wind to our advantage,** T'nom
could feel the strain of the bronze as he fought against a rather
large gust. **The Thread is blowing out of our range ahead,** T'nom
pointed. The dragons around quickly communicated and their formation
quickly blinked /between/ to reach the Thread before it could get
through the ranks.
Lulorth pumped her wings, moving ahead of the rest of the formation to
aim at a loose tangle of Thread. **No, stay back!** A surge of panic
went through Merefin. Without the larger dragons blocking the winds,
Lulorth was blown to the side.
T'nom's eyes caught sight of Lulorth out of formation. In the same
moment he saw the clump of Thread blowing straight towards the pair
who were struggling to regain control.
**Taldeth, now.** He commanded, sharing an image with the bronze,
knowing it was risky to /between/ so close. They emerged from the sky
just above and to the side of Lulorth, flames bursting forth from
Taldeth's massive maw and burning the Thread just seconds before it
would have scored the younger rider and dragon. The winds were strong
and harsh.
**We will fly with you back to formation,** Taldeth told Lulorth,
moving in as closely as possible to shield as much of the wind from
the smaller dragon as he could. The gusts were difficult, but
Taldeth's strength and T'nom's concentration allowed them to move
forward against the winds. **The winds are getting stronger. The wing
may not be able to keep this up much longer,** T'nom expressed to
Taldeth just as he felt the first drops of rain splash upon them. Once
the rain picked up enough, he knew N'vanik would call a cease to the
fighting. **Tell Lulorth to stay close to us and to stay within the
formation for her own safety and the safety of her rider.**
Merefin's cheeks burned with shame and distress. Lulorth rumbled at
the feelings from her rider and her eagerness to show off evaporated.
She meekly followed Taldeth, staying on the lee side of the bronze as
the rain increased. Finally it was heavy enough to drown Thread and
N'vanik called the Wings back to the Weyr.
Now they had to play a waiting game, standing ready in case the rain
let up. N'vanik took the opportunity to pull Merefin aside and chew
her out. When he was done she went back to Lulorth with her head low,
the green crooning in apology.
That unpleasant task over, N'vanik took a breath and headed over to
T'nom. "You did good out there. You saved that pair's hides."
T'nom had noted that N'vanik had visited Merefin and Lulorth. He,
however, had not expected N'vanik to stop over to talk with him.
"Thank you, N'vanik. I honestly just did what needed to be done.
Things could have gone _much_ worse for them. I'm just glad Taldeth
and I were able to help. The pair really needs more practice in the
wing and working together as a team or else next time they might not
be so lucky."
"Maybe this was enough to get them straightened out." N'vanik would
have A'kades follow up with them later. "I'll have you lead a three
with her at the next drill."
T'nom stood a bit taller at feeling the small amount of praise from
the man who hadn't exactly liked him in the past. "I would be happy to
lead and help them improve their skills so they can be a true asset to
the wing."
So eager to please. N'vanik bit back a smile, wondering if T'nom was
still trying to prove himself. Whatever happened while he was away,
the young bronzerider did seem more mature. "I'll meet with you after
for a report."
T'nom nodded. "I expect to have good news to report on their
improvement within the wing, N'vanik."
