"Hey," T'nom called out as he entered the curtained off area, "how are
you feeling today?"
Being weaned off of the fellis was difficult after a steady supply for
a sevenday, and he felt weak as a kitten. Hearing the familiar voice,
he opened his eyes from the half-reclined position they kept him in.
"Hey. Doing alright. Sore mostly. "
T'nom pulled up a chair and sat next to his friend. "I can only
imagine," he remarked. "You know if you were feeling better I'd bring
you a drink to replace the Fellis," he chuckled, recalling the night
they had gotten rather drunk together.
J'ackt groaned. "I'd rather have this than the hangover I had the day
after drinking with you." Despite his complaint, J'ackt had a
half-smile on his face. He was tired, felt weak, and sometimes his
hands trembled, but the Healers said he was improving. "Not letting me
leave yet."
"Hopefully soon, though," T'nom replied. "Then we can celebrate with
some drinks," T'nom grinned and chuckled. "I got a few more bottles of
the _good_ stuff." He couldn't help teasing J'ackt a bit. Then, he did
look a bit more seriously at his friend. "I heard that they caught the
fecking fool who did this to you. I wish I could have a turn at him."
His hand clenched into a fist at the thought.
"I think he's banged up." J'ackt frowned with a sigh. "Have to talk
to N'vanik about seeing him. He's locked up I think. "He had his own
thoughts about what he'd like to do, but remembering that he almost
killed him was enough. "Don't know what they're gonna do. Haven't
told me."
T'nom frowned as he flexed his fist. "Well, just know that if I _had_
the chance, I _would_ stand beside you." T'nom truly meant that. He
knew some of J'ackt's past, but not all, and it honestly didn't
matter. What mattered was the man he had met and befriended was
someone he knew was truly loyal and trustworthy. That's all that
mattered to T'nom.
"Do you need anything? I have no idea if they give you everything you
want when you're here for awhile. If you need anything, I'd be happy
to help get it for you." T'nom had been lucky enough to not have to
spend any prolonged time in the infirmary. Minor scrapes, a few burns,
nothing major.
J'ackt just looked at T'nom for a long moment, surprised by the
vehemence. He didn't know how to take it; he knew N'vanik would do the
same, but wouldn't have asked T'nom, nor expected it of him. Did the
other bronzerider think that high of him? And why? "Thanks. Really, I
mean it. I wouldn't ask you to though." He rubbed a hand through his
hair wearily. "Yeah, they do. Most of the time I just slept. That
Healer, the pretty one Urlene, said I lost a lot of blood, so I should just
rest as much as I can. It's boring as blazes, but I just find myself
nodding off most of the time. The other times though...shards, I hate
just doing nothing. I'm not used to it."
T'nom just shrugged at J'ackt's words. "If it was me, I'd want a knife
and some wood to whittle away at, but I know that's not what most
people prefer." He snorted a bit at that. "Not much I can think of
that you'd be able to do. I'm sure the harpers would suggest hides and
such." He shrugged. "I _could_ stop by with some dragon poker cards
and we could play a hand or two to pass the time?"
"I don't think Urlene will let anything sharp anywhere near me while
I'm here, unless she's holding it." He lay back and rubbed his eyes,
shaking his head at the second suggestion. "I don't read good. The
letters get all jumbled in my head and it gives me a headache. I only
do it when I have to. I just learned a couple of turns ago anyway."
The last suggestion sparked his interest. "Dragonpoker? I don't know
how to play, but I've seen it. Looks interesting." His eyes gave a
faint gleam. " 'Specially since you gotta lie to win."
"Sounds like we've got a plan then," T'nom chuckled. "I'll stop by
after my sweep patrol with some cards and I'll teach you all the
tricks of dragonpoker! My guess is you'll be a pro at it pretty
quickly!" He snorted a bit at that knowing just how much J'ackt had
learned to hold back in his own life. "In fact, I look forward to a
good competition later tonight!"
