Ma'din

Jeyme felt hollow as she dropped Dheymin off with his foster mother
and then checked in with Ayeme for a little bit before leaving her as
well. The greenrider wanted to be alone that night. Her thoughts were
busy in her head with everything that had unfolded in such a short
amount of time.

Entering her weyr, she closed the door and walked straight for the
letter that she had stuffed beneath her pillow before going to help
Cyradis talk D'hol into having the surgery that could possibly save
his life. Opening the letter again she read it slowly, taking time to
note each word.

To know that he really had loved her put to rest one of the biggest
questions she'd carried with her during the Turns at Far Island Weyr.
Even if they weren't weyrmates anymore, to think that he'd nearly died
made her sick to her stomach. To know that he'd wanted to go in
Threadfall... She put a trembling hand over her eyes as A'dan's face
swam before her vision.

She remembered it as if it were yesterday, the way it had felt during
Threadfall when Quinneth had keened and reported that Creloth and
A'dan had gone /between/, for good, having sustained heavy injuries.
To imagine getting that same report from Quinneth about Yumath and
D'hol made her sick.

Tucking the letter away, Jeyme went to her wine cabinet, a place she
rarely visited, opened the first bottle she came to, and turned it up
to her lips.

No one he had spoken to could give him any information; he'd gone to
Cyradis' weyr, but no one was home, not even Kielya. And his knock at
D'hol's went unanswered. He knew full well that Yumath was in the
Weyr, but was huddled up and had told Aznith little
except they were still living, but were now grounded. **Obviously.**
Ma'din snorted. What the sharding blazes had happened? He'd been
expecting news most of the day and had received nothing, despite being
prepared to come and see his siblings to check on them.

Frowning, he went to the one person who might actually know what was
going on. Heading to her weyr, he paused, then rapped heavily on the
door.

**Was that.. the door?** Jeyme lowered the bottle, from which she'd
already taken several generous gulps.

}:Yes, it was the door.:{ Quinneth assured her.

Wondering who could be at her weyr so late, she carried the open
bottle with her as she swung the door open and raised her eyebrows.
"Ma'din?"

His eyes flicked down to the bottle and then back up to her, meeting
her gaze. "Ah. Find out, did you? So care to tell me what's going on?
Was expecting news all day, and when I get here, everyone's lips are
zipped."

Jeyme's eyes narrowed accusatorily, not budging to let him in yet, "You knew?"

He met her gaze evenly. "Course. Why would I be asking if I didn't? I
was the only one, as far as I know. Guess you know now." He looked
pointedly down at the bottle. "So what happened? Far as I know, he
planned on...ending things today; He's bloody well not answering his
door, and Yumath is blocking the ledge."

She sighed and stepped away from the door so that he could enter.
"Cyradis figured it out and Panitath recalled Yumath to the Weyr. From
what I understand, D'hol was pissed and she slapped him in the
Weyrbowl." Jeyme shrugged a little at that and took another drink from
the bottle. "Then she and I took Dheymin and Kieyla to D'hol in order
to convince him to get the surgery, for the sake of his children."

He stepped in, closing the door behind him, listening as she spoke,
but watching her down the bottle. "Did you now. And he fell for that?
Well...I didn't think he could be swayed. You all must know his weak
points much better than me, not that I tried talking him out of it."
He shrugged, his eyes narrowing as he followed her movements.
"Wine-drunk will give you one blazes of a hangover." He stood and
plucked the bottle from her hand. "What gives? It's not like you're a
couple anymore."

Jeyme frowned at her empty hand. "Just because we're not together
doesn't mean I don't love him and want the best for him."

"So you still love him?" He held up the bottle. "That's why you're
drowning yourself in wine that..." He looked at the bottle." Well,
shards, it's a good vintage." He tipped it back himself, taking a
swallow. "So if he's having the surgery and all that, why're you
upset? Cause he didn't tell you? Told me there was bad blood between
you two." He handed her back the bottle. "Something he did. So what'd
he do?"

"It's not about what he did back then. It's about what he tried to do
today. I lost my weyrmate a little over a Turn ago in Threadfall, and
then today..." Jeyme quit talking as her voice grew croaky, and
cleared her throat and shook her head.

"So you're trying to forget all that. Well good luck, drinking doesn't
do that." He leaned against the wall, eyes studying her. "There are
better ways to distract yourself."

She eyed him. "Yeah?"

"Oh yeah. Shagging someone you're not supposed to is one fecking great
way to forget about your troubles." His eyes glinted. "Keeps the mind
occupied." He stood straight and approached her. "And I'm supposed to
be off-limits, right?"

She wasn't with D'hol anymore, as he'd pointed out earlier, but Ma'din
was her son's half-brother. That should be a little taboo, right? What
she didn't want was to sit around thinking of A'dan or D'hol that
evening. The brownrider had made passes at her before, and she'd
always turned them down without a second thought, but tonight....

"Not tonight," she said launching herself at him.

And he caught her, his hands grabbing her bottom to lift her against
him. Ma'din chuckled, then sealed his mouth to hers to taste her for
the first time. She was a sweet little piece in his arms and he was
most willing to help her forget about anything she wanted. He pulled
his mouth away from hers, slowly sliding her lower lip through his
teeth. "Sweet. " He glanced up, saw her bed and carried her there.

Jeyme wrapped her legs around his waist as he carried her, fingers
making quick work on the buttons of his shirt. Some small part of her
had worried that he might feel or taste like D'hol, but he didn't,
which was exactly what she needed at that moment.

When he laid her down and helped her strip off his own clothes, he
wasted little time in removing her of her own. His eyes gleamed in
pleasure at the sight; now he knew why D'hol hadn't wanted him anywhere
near the woman at first. When he joined her on the bed, Ma'din
made sure that for the next couple of hours, Jeyme wouldn't think at
all.
