Today's visit hadn't gone as planned and T'nom was feeling a bit
frustrated by events. In the few days he'd been at the Weyr he hadn't
really bonded with many. Yet, he'd taken a liking to the other
bronzerider in his wing. Maybe he wouldn't mind another chat over
drinks?
**Find out if J'ackt's around.** T'nom asked Taldeth.
}:Zith says he is in his weyr:{ Taldeth replied.
Tucking a few bottles under his arm, he made his way to J'ackt's weyr,
hoping one of the few new friends he'd made would be open to a visit.
He rapped on the door even as he took a drink from the one bottle he'd
already opened.
J'ackt frowned down at the straps, checking the odd tears with
frustration. He had just gotten these two months ago, they shouldn't
be tearing so quickly. He exhaled, then looked up at his door. "Come
on in." He put them down and moved quickly to grip Stumpy's collar.
The young canine gave a woof of excitement at the knock, bouncing on
his single forepaw. "Down, you beast."
Opening the door, T'nom entered, "Hey, J'ackt, care for a bit of
friendly company?"
The moment he entered, Stumpy broke free of J'ackt's grip and chaos
ensued. Stumpy, for only having three legs, could move fast; he
barreled at T'nom with feverish glee and promptly jumped up on him,
his tail whipping from side to side.
"Shaffit, Stump!" J'ackt moved forward to catch the canine, but didn't
reach him before the canine attempted to bowl T'nom over.
"Whoa!" T'nom called out nearly knocked to the ground as the drink
he'd opened on his way sloshed over both him and the dog. "Down boy,
down!" T'nom tried to right the bottle before more of the liquor
spilled. He couldn't resist laughing as the dog seemed to lap up the
alcohol that was splattered all over them. "I _had_ brought us some
drinks," T'nom chuckled, looking over the dog towards J'ackt.
Stumpy slathered happily over T'nom, bashing the poor man with his
tail and his chest before J'ackt pulled him away and scolded the
exuberant canine. "Down!" He dragged him away and scolded him,
pressing down on his bottom to convince him to sit. Now thoroughly
chagrined, Stumpy looked at both men and slumped to the floor, big
brown eyes staring wistfully at them both. "Sorry about that, T'nom.
He doesn't have any manners and the most I've been able to teach him
is not to mess in the Weyr. You okay?"
T'nom chuckled. "If you mean from the dog attack," he grinned at that,
"or just in general?" T'nom shrugged. "I could handle a greeting like
that anyday, did you say his name was Stump? It's definitely better
than some of the other greetings I get." T;nom took a hand and swiped
at the mixture of drink and drool that now covered his shirt.
"From Stumpy." He eyed the canine and reached into a cabinet to offer
T'nom a towel. "If that's better, then I have to wonder what kind of
greetings you do get." He glanced at the remaining bottles and arched
a brow. "What're all those for?"
T'nom caught the towel and swiped at his face and clothes with it.
"These?" He held up the bottles. "I need a drinking buddy, and
honestly, J'ackt. I don't know who I can really drink with here now."
T'nom had history with enough of the riders here that he wasn't sure
anymore who would take kindly to him blathering in his drink. So many
were close with both Pierka and Meledei. J'ackt didn't know how that
had all transpired. It meant he wouldn't judge T'nom like so many of
the others still were.
"It's been a rough few days for me. Care to drink with me?" He raised
one of the bottles towards J'ackt. "Not many here really consider me a
friend these days."
As a rule, J'ackt didn't drink to enjoy himself. He had once imbibed
too much, but it hadn't been out of enjoyment; occasionally, he might
have a cup of ale, but what T'nom had brought looked as though he was
preparing for a private party. He glanced at the other rider's face,
then back at the bottles. He wasn't entirely sure he exactly
considered T'nom a friend either, but the other man looked...lonely.
He could relate. He pursed his lip, then slowly took the bottle and
gestured to one of his chairs at the table. "Sure. Why not?"
He flicked open the bottle's lid and took a seat himself. "Why so rough?"
T'nom settled into a seat with a slouch, taking a long drink of the bottle.
"Have you ever had everyone _assume_ the worst about you, when inside
you _aren't_ that person? I mean you can't continue to judge someone
by a _few_ mistakes they made Turns ago?" T'nom sighed and sipped his
bottle again.
He just stared at T'nom for a long moment before a short cynical bark
of laughter erupted from him. "You really don't know anything about
me, do you? Ask around, man. It's all the fecking time for me. You get
used to it. Thing is to not care about what people think." He took a
sip, considered the taste, then shrugged, deciding that it wasn't so
bad after all. "All people do is judge."
T'nom chuckled and raised his own bottle when J'ackt did. "You know, I
haven't bothered to ask anyone much about you. I felt we had a
connection of sorts, but now I must admit I'm a bit curious." He
snorted. "People _do_ judge. It's not always easy, but I've spent
Turns working past it. I just didn't expect it to hit so hard when I
came back." He _wasn't_ leaving again, however. Not this time.
"It's a long story and I don't really want to tell it." J'ackt took
another pull on his drink. "But did you hear about a Weyrling fighting
a hold guard from Emerald Falls?" He pointed to himself. "People still
talk about it."
T'nom sputtered his drink at that. "I _did_ hear that tale, but I
guess I just didn't recall _who_ was behind that story. Nice to
formally know the former weyrling who caused such a stir!" T'nom
chuckled a bit. "We all have our stories to tell. Perhaps someday
we'll both hear each other's story more. For now, I'm happy to just
have someone to drink with who _isn't_ judging me." He lifted his
bottle and took another swig.
J'ackt lifted his bottle and drank as well. "So, I get judging me, but
why does anyone judge you?" He sat back in his chair. "Sorry, but you
seem kind of the straight and narrow sort. The proper bronzerider and
all that."
T'nom snorted, "Yeah, well, when the whole Weyr loves the junior
goldrider and you get branded with," he stopped and rolled his eyes a
bit, "breaking her heart, just because you _are_ a rider, people turn
on you. And that at the same time you end up getting the other rider
pregnant and sort of push her aside. I guess people don't take too
well to hurting the hearts of two girls at the same time." He was
surprised actually how _hard_ people had taken things considering that
riders were jumping in and out of beds all the time. "Instead of
staying and dealing with it, I sort of ran off and transferred." It
honestly didn't sound any worse than a love triangle as he explained
it all, but at the time it had definitely caused a big issue.
He took another swig of his bottle. He was feeling _much_ more relaxed
now. "Personally, I'm more frustrated knowing that my own son calls
another man, da."
J'ackt winced as T'nom outlined the problems facing him. "Yeah,
well...don't get attached at all, is what I think." He drained his own
bottle and put it to the side. "Just don't. When you do...that's when
there's trouble." He snorted with more than a little bitterness. "At
least yours wasn't fecking scared of you, now were they?" As another
bottle was passed to him, he felt a bit warm around the ears, but he
opened it and swallowed just as quickly. He was feeling more relaxed
as he leaned back. "Don't get me wrong. My best friend's a girl,
Saidrene. Also turned out to be my cousin, but that's all sorts of
messed up anyways. But the one girl I really wanted..." He made a pfft
noise through his teeth.
T'nom wasn't sure it was all the drinks he'd imbibed that was making
that last bit hard to follow. His friend, turned out to be his cousin,
it seemed. He shook his head to clear the foggy thoughts that were
creeping in.
"Yeah, that's my new philosophy now. Don't get attached. Enjoy the
moment, no strings, no attachments." He raised the bottle in salute to
the idea then took another swig which he fished with a satisfied sigh.
It felt _good_ not to think about things.
J'ackt raised his own. "No attachments! Bed 'em and that's it." He
took a heavy swig and looked at the bottle. "Feck, man...what is this
stuff? It's good."
"Mmm," T'nom said, holding the bottle up to look at it again. "I
bought it off some trader when I got here. I forget what he called it.
I asked for his strongest beer." T'nom took another swig and sighed
happily. "I'm glad to have a drinking buddy to share it with. I'll
make sure to get the name of it next time." His words weren't quite as
clear as they had been earlier. T'nom wasn't sure how many bottles
he'd already drank.
"You're drunk." J'ackt announced, pointing at T'nom. "Sslurring your
words now." He stared at his own almost empty bottle and finished it.
"So wha's your girl's name? Ya never said."
"I'm not zee only one," T'nom snorted back at J'ackt. "Pierka? She had
my zun...I mean ssson. You sshhould meet him."
"I'm not drunk! M'ears just warm. Tha's all." He reached for another
bottle and paused. "Pierka? You're Kazom's da?" He flipped open his
new bottle. "Oh... She's cute. Had a bit of a hankerin' for her at
first. Thought 'bout her sister too. She's got a great ass. But..."He
shrugged. "Nev'r got 'round to it."
T'nom looked at him funny for a bit, "She has a sista?" T'nom recalled
she didn't know much about her family at all. "Who?"
"Uh...Lani..uh.." He waved a hand, trying to say the now difficult
name. "Cute lil' redhead golder wi' the nice ass. Comes here
alot..hangs out wi' F'lin... think his name is."
T'nom spit out some of his beer. "What?" How had he not known that. He
had been thinking about some no strings attached encounters with
goldrider, but shardit she was Pierka's sister. "Glad I sta'd outta
her bed." He could only imagine how _that_ would have gone over.
J'ackt laughed as T'nom nearly choked on his own beer. " Why? I mean,
shards, she's prolly a little firecacker. 'S not like you and Pierka
are t'gether. " J'ackt's grin widened. "Bet ya could ask F'lin. See if
it's worth th' risk. No strings, 'member?"
"Yeah, no strings." he lifted his beer to that salute. "Know any other
good _no strings_ kinna gals?"
"Cosani don't like strings an' she's very good. " J'ackt grinned.
"Fun and talented. She'll keep ya busy." He lifted his bottle again.
"Good to know," T'nom replied. He chuckled. He was feeling _really_
good now. "Good stuff, eh?" He asked, lifting his own bottle again,
then realizing it was empty he frowned. "Whe'd that go soo fast?"
"Yup." J'ackt gave a chuckle, then flopped forward to eye T'nom's
bottle. "Ya drank it. In one gulp. How'd ya do that?"
T'nom snorted, "I dunno." He reached for another bottle. Empty.
"Shaffa...it's all gone." He honestly didn't care. He was feeling
pretty good now from all the alcohol he'd imbibed.
" 'Sall gone?" J'ackt stared at T'nom's empty hand. "All of it?
But...I was'n done!" He drained his bottle and gave an impolite burp.
"Tha's feckin' just wrong...Where do we get more?"
"I has a few more in my weyr," T'nom replied. "I can go git em," he
started to stand up, but swayed a bit on his feet. "Then 'gain, ma'be
I better stay 'ere a bit." He plunked back down into his seat with a
snort and a bit of a chuckle.
