Description: The new Dragonsfall Weyrlings have their dragonet first-aid class.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 1, day 25 of Turn 9
W'ser enjoyed the days where he helped with Weyrling lessons, it was
nice to get out of the infirmary, or his office, and interact with the
new riders. Today's lesson was taking place outside, with plenty of
room for the Weyrlings to bring their dragonets to class with them.
Branth was standing just behind his rider, waiting and ready to be
used as an example while W'ser taught about dragon anatomy, up-close,
and how to properly care for minor injuries.
S'lan, he still had trouble remembering his name change at times, and
his lifemate made their way toward the class. "Oh look," he pointed
admiring the large brown. "He's brown like you."
}:He must be very smart:{ Wazath replied as he walked next to his
rider. }:Will there be food?:{
**You just ate!** S'lan looked incredulous at him.
}:I know but I get hungry fast:{
The fourteen turn old sighed heavily. **I'll find you something after class.**
Erivana walked towards the group, keeping her hand on Seryth flank to
nudge the green into line when her attention wandered. She was already
finding that Seryth seemed to be harder to keep on topic, like she
chased after every thought that fluttered through her mind, like how
canines might chase leaves blown by the wind.
"Weyrdragonhealer, how are you and Branth?" she greeted when she
arrived. She knew him from having reported in, and while she didn't
have dragonhealer lessons right now since weyrling ones took priority,
she knew that she would go back to working with him after graduation.
Seryth settled down by Wazath and peered over at her clutchmate
curiously, but said nothing.
E'naer nodded a greeting to W'ser when he arrived. He always enjoyed
working with the Weyrdragonhealer. It was also refreshing change to
take the backseat and let someone else do the lesson, He would be only
assisting.
Tarley was one of the last to arrive, she and her green stood off to
the side, carefully avoiding Erivana and Seryth.
}:But, I would like to stand beside of Seryth.:{ Monicath complained.
**I think it's best we stay back here.** Tarley had felt awkward
around Erivana ever since the fiasco on the Hatching Sands.
J'nne glanced at the others arriving before the bronze hide of his own
lifemate caught his eye. He sat bemused and dazed by it all.
"Allright, it looks like we have everyone, so we're going to get
started. If we haven't met, my name is W'ser, this is Branth, and we
serve as the Weyrdragonhealer for Dragonsfall. We're going to be
looking at some basic dragon anatomy today with your lifemates and
we'll also cover how to treat some very basic problems."
S'lan nodded to the other weyrlings as they took their seats around
him. He kept one hand on Wazath's head and stroked the soft hide.
E'naer was observing the Weyrlings. With his experience, seeing how
they acted during the classes told him a lot about their
personalities.
Tribeth peered over to the green Weyrlingmaster Third. }:He's a clever
one, :{ he informed his lifemate.
**How would you know?** J'nne glanced down at his chubby bronze.
}:Something in the look in his eyes and the way he stands.:{ Tribeth
nodded to himself, more interested in studying the man rather than pay
attention to the brownrider speaking.
"First," W'ser said, getting started, "I want you to take a moment and
look at your lifemate's back. Run your hand along the length of it,"
he demonstrated by pointing to the top of Branth's back. "There are
ten vertebra in your lifemate's neck, and and fifty-six in the back.
As you can imagine, the strength of these vertebra are very important
for flying and carrying passengers. This is why you aren't allowed on
your dragon's neckridge until they are sufficiently strong enough to
support the weight, and then after that, there's a period of time
before your dragon will be able to support passengers."
The problem with being a dragonhealer apprentice was that you already
_knew_ this information. Erivana prided herself in being someone good
at being studious, and whenever she was learning new information she
tried to be, but it was hard to pay attention to things you'd been
learning for Turns and Turns.
Still, to show she was still paying some attention, she ran her hand
over Seryth's back like W'ser instructed, feeling the hide and the
bones and plates underneath. It felt different from an adult dragon,
the skin a bit softer and it seemed a bit bumpier.
}:That is nice,:{ the green said, closing her eyelids and leaning into
the caress. }:You should just keep doing that.:{
S'lan had also followed the dragonhealer's instructions though Wazath
wriggled and wouldn't sit still.
E'naer silently observed the weyrlings and remembered fondly of his
own apprentice days. He had switched from healing to dragonhealing
after he Impressed.
The lesson moved on with the Weyrlings exploring the different parts
of their lifemate.
"Now, we're going to practice some basic bandaging. Find your
lifemate's left fingersail. These can sometimes become damaged by
thread or if your lifemate has an uneasy landing. By wrapping you can
provide stability for maneuverability until the fingersail has
repaired itself. You are still encouraged to take your dragon to a
dragonhealer to make sure it's nothing too serious." W'ser nodded his
head and the Weyrlingstaff began to distribute bandages. "I'll
demonstrate on Branth, and you follow along," he told the Weyrlings.
E'naer helped to distribute the bandage-rolls.
S'lan tried to maneuver Wazath and watch W'ser all at the same time.
"Stop that," he whispered when the little brown kept pulling his wing
out of his hands.
Tribeth watched J'nne wrap his finger until he decided that whatever
Wazath was doing was a lot more interesting. He crooned to the brown
and leaned towards him, undoing all of J'nne's hard work.
E'naer stopped to instruct someone. "Don't wrap it so tightly, you'll
cu the circulation."
He looked around if someone else need help and sighed.
"Erivana, since you're dragonhealer's apprentice, why don't you help
your fellow weyrings," he suggested.
S'lan finally goth Wazath stilled long enough to bandage the finger as
instructed then waited for one of the team to inspect his work.
Erivana leaned over to look at Wazath. "That looks pretty good," she
said as an aside to S'lan.
Not to be outdone by his clutchmates, Tribeth settled down and
pointedly let J'nne wrap his finger.
W'ser walked among the Weyrlings, helping some, and encouraging
others. "Thanks for your help, Tarley," he murmured to the green
Weyrling who was currently re-rolling an entire bandage that a clumsy
Weyrling had dropped.
"Of course, Master W'ser." Tarley had been in the dragonhealer craft
long enough to have rolled bandages several times.
"Alright, everyone listen up..." W'ser's voice boomed for attention.
The lesson continued and by the end of it the Weyrlings had wrapped
nearly every part of their lifemate that could be bandaged. Some
caught on rather quickly, while others fumbled until their dragonet
grew tired and laid down.
"That's all of the first aid for today. Thanks for your attention."
The Weyrdragonhealer nodded in E'naer's direction in case the
Weyrlingmaster's Third had anything he wished to add before dismissing
the class.
E'naer shook his head discreetly and started to collect the bandages
from weyrlings.
