N'vanik

Jeyme balanced Dheymin on one hip and a gift-wrapped package in the
other as she stood outside of N'vanik's office. She didn't dare try to
take the gift to his weyr since she was afraid she might run into
Talryne.

"N'vanik?" she knocked on the door with the toe of her boot since her
hands were full.

After a moment the door opened. N'vanik's thoughtful frown turned into
surprise. "Jeyme." And with the little one, too. This wasn't their day for a visit. "Need something?"

A smile blossomed on Jeyme's face, "Happy Birthday! Me and Dheymin
wanted to stop by and give you a gift."

Dheymin reached out both of his chubby baby hands toward the
Weyrleader and said what sounded like, "Papa Nik!" in his baby talk.

N'vanik melted at the sight and held out one of his big hands. "Hey little guy." To Jeyme, he said, "A gift? You remembered?"

"Of course we remembered." Jeyme bounced Dheymin on her hip. "I hope
it's okay that we came by here, I wasn't sure what your plans might be
for later."

The corner of his mouth tilted up. "My plan is to escape soon. C'mon
in." He opened the door wider.

Jeyme entered the Weyrleader's office and laid the gift on his desk.
Dheymin extended his arms toward N'vanik and lifted his eyebrows, clearly expecting his second father to pick him up. "Up! Up!"

N'vanik obliged, lifting the baby into his arms. He pulled out a chair
for Jeyme before going around the desk to take a seat. "Let's see what
you got me." He maneuvered Dheymin until he could hold the boy and open the small box at the same time.

Inside was a flat disk of white clay with two little handprints
pressed into it. N'vanik lifted it out, carefully cradling it in one hand. "Thank you." He gave Jeyme a warm smile. He was going to find a place for it in the office so he could look at it throughout the day.

"Did you make this for Papa Nik?" he asked Dheymin.

Dheymin merely beamed and waved his chubby hands, earning a smile from his mother. "He wasn't thrilled about putting his hands into the clay
so it came out better than I expected."

"It's perfect." He set the memento down out of reach of Dheymin. "And
even better, I get a visit from this little guy on my birthingday." He bounced Dheymin.

Jeyme smiled at the picture the two of them made together, "I'm glad
you were in your office, he's with his foster mother tonight." Being holdbred still made it difficult for Jeyme to send her child away, but her duties to Quinneth and the Weyr required it.

N'vanik made faces at Dheymin. "You have so many parents. What a lucky
boy." N'vanik could hardly imagine how different his life would have
been if he'd been raised in a Weyr.

She had never looked at it that way, she supposed, that rather than Dheymin missing out on his real parents, he was simply surrounded by more people that loved and cared for him. "Well, we'd best be going, I've got drills this afternoon."

"Okay." N'vanik hugged the little boy and stood. "Thank you for bringing him. And the gift. It means a lot."

Jeyme took Dheymin from the Weyrleader and balanced him on her hip as she gave N'vanik a one-arm hug, "You're welcome. Send my best to Talryne." She smiled to the tall bronzerider before turning and leaving, ready to get Dheymin to his foster mother so that she wouldn't be late for drills.
