A Refreshing Change

Karaleigh closed the door to the classroom and gave it a good tug to be sure. Turning around, he was surprised to see a man leaned against the wall across from her just watching her. "Shards!" she breathed in her surprised.
Bringing a hand to cover her pounding heart. "Excuse me, bronzerider. I didn't see you standing there."

"I didn't mean to startle you," Y'sani replied with a friendly smile. "I just didn't want to bother you until you were finished."

"Oh, that's all right," the harper smiled, pulling a loose strand of hair back behind her ear. "Sorry it's so late. I didn't realize anyone would be waiting for me."

Y'sani offered her his arm politely. "I did promise to come back and invite you to dinner once I found myself a 'second, didn't I? I like to keep my promises."

She smiled as she slipped her arm into his. "You do seem to be a man of his word. That's rather refreshing."

"I wish it weren't so refreshing," Y'sani replied, starting them down the hallway. "But as a man of my word, I'd like to ask you to share dinner with me on the next evening you have free. If you don't have anything keeping you here, I know of a lovely little beach I used to visit all the time when I was at Far Island Weyr. I'd be pleased if you'd join me." "Oh, well I would love to see it. Thank you for the offer." After all, it had been a long time since she had escaped the confines of the Weyr. What a nice change it would be to get away for an evening. And she was pretty sure she could even trust Y'sani not to try anything untoward.

He smiled at her acceptance, though he'd been confident enough that she wouldn't turn him down. "I can't do anything tomorrow night, but I'm free the night after. If you're free, I'll make all the arrangements."
**Arrangements?** "I _believe_ the day after tomorrow is free..." Of course, every day was free for her.

"Good." It would give him time to set everything in order. Karaleigh had intrigued him enough that he wanted to make sure this first impression was a _very_ good one. "Hopefully nothing too terribly important will come up between now and then..." "Well, I'm sure nothing will come for me between now and then." Karaleigh would make _sure_ of that. Good dates were hard to find in the Weyr!

"Unless one of the weyrlings takes it into their heads to do something foolish," Y'sani replied in an exasperated tone, though his eyes were amused when he glanced at her. "I can't tell you how often _that_ happens."

"Ah, but you have a _second_ now," she teased lightly. "If it's not _too_
bad perhaps he can handle it for you."

Y'sani laughed. "Believe me, Karaleigh... anything that is remotely within his capabilities will be all his responsibility for the evening. I don't plan on missing my first night out in months, especially not with the company I've managed to win."

Karaleigh actually blushed a little. "Well, I will try to make your evening worth the trouble... conversationally of course..." Shards, she sounded like one of her weyrbrats!

"Of course," he replied, his voice sounding amused. "Don't worry, Karaleigh.
Our first meeting taught me that you are a woman to be reckoned with. I'll be on my best behavior." "Oh well, yes, I usually am," she chuckled. "But I have to admit, its been a while since I took someone up on an offer like this."

"It's been a while since I made an offer like this," he admitted easily.
"But then again, it's been a while since I had a woman turn down my romantic advanced before I even got around to making them. I have to say, it was a refreshing change." "Well, few men here seem to share your view." Most found it a most unwelcome change, in fact. "The fact that I haven't already scared you away is a rarity for me."

He chuckled and gave her an amused look. "Formidable you might be, journeywoman, but frightening you are not. I think I'll be able to hold my own against anything you can throw at me." "I certainly hope so, bronzerider." And for once, she meant it.
