"Excuse me ma'am." Doria's voice squeaked on the last word. She cleared her throat softly and blushed.
"I mean it, Devean, if I see one more charred piece of meat I'm demoting you to dishwasher!" Chaysea's cheeks were flushed, from her mood and from the heat of the kitchens.
Hearing the voice behind her, Chaysea turned with her hands on her hips. "Can I help you?"
Doria took a step back, her eyes wide. "Um… it doesn't matter."
Chaysea sighed and wiped her sleeve across her brow. Just what she needed right now, a shy awkward Candidate to deal with. "Clearly something matters or you wouldn't have approached me. Come on then, let's get out of this heat." Snatching a cold pitcher of fruit juice from the new cold storage units that had been installed, Chaysea turned and led the way out of the kitchens and into the corridors that were much cooler.
"Now, what is it you need?" Chaysea asked again, with less agitation as she opened the door to her office and directed Doria inside.
"I just needed some new shoes." She hadn't meant it to be a bother, and now it was, but hers were falling apart. She generally wore things until they did, rather than go looking for replacements.
Chaysea's eyes automatically went down to the shoes on Doria's feet. "Yes, you are." The Headwoman poured herself a cup of the fruit juice and gulped some of it down with a satisfied sigh. That hit the spot.
"What else are you in need of? Do you have clothes for chores and dress clothes in the event that you Impress?" she asked.
"I have plenty of clothes for chores." Most of the girl's clothes were suitable for that. "I have a dress, but I might have outgrown it…" It had fit a turn ago, but she'd grown since.
"Do your clothes for chores fit, or are they in the same condition as your shoes?" Chaysea asked, an eyebrow arched.
Doria swallowed. "I have some which fit, for my craft." A weaver couldn't look _too_ messy after all.
Finishing off her cup of fruit juice in one gulp, Chaysea crooked her finger at Doria, "Let's go then." She led the way down the hall to the large storage room that housed most of the Weyr's general, clothing options. Shelves of pants and skirts were folded and neatly stacked, while racks stood full with shirts, blouses and coats.
"You'll find shoes on the back wall, make sure you try them on to see if they fit. I'll get you some work clothes together." Chaysea had a good eye for sizes and she immediately set off in search of a couple of pairs of pants for the girl.
"Yes ma'am." Doria chose a couple of pairs of shoes that looked like the right size and sat down on the floor to try them on. The first pair were a little tight and she soon put them back in their place on the shelf. The second pair fit a little better, but she wasn't sure she could get away with red. She stood to find the same size in a more subtle colour.
In no time the Headwoman emerged from the shelves with two pairs of pants tucked beneath her arm. "Any luck with the shoes?"
"I found some that fit, but I'm looking for a different colour." Doria frowned and put down another pair which looked too big.
"You in need of any underclothes?" Chaysea asked. "Are you good on personal items?"
"I think I have enough, thank you." Doria's mother always gave such items as gifts on birthingdays and Turn's End. It was dull but useful.
When they'd found all of the items that Doria needed, Chaysea folded them all neatly and placed them into a bag, although she left out the shoes in case the girl wanted to wear them immediately. "I think you're set for a while. If you Impress there will be some more things you need." All of the Weyrlings were provided with their first pair of riding leathers, flying jacket, and boots.
"Thank you ma'am." Doria took the bag and held it against herself. Hopefully her mother wouldn't see how long she'd taken. She'd ream her out for taking so much of the Headwoman's time.
"Of course, Doria, any time."
