Barenziah

"I haven't seen you around lately." Barenziah said as she set her tray of food down beside of D'shiel in the Dining Cavern for evening meal. In fact, she hadn't seen him since the day they'd went abseiling.

"Yeah, sorry about that." The truth was, he'd had such a good time it had freaked him out a little. He didn't want to mess up with her when things actually seemed to be going well. "I've been meaning to-" something, he wasn't sure what.

It sounded like the lead in to a gentle rejection, so Barenziah held up her hand. "Oh, no, it's fine, really."

"No it's not," he replied. "I just didn't want to rush you. But, there's a gather if you want to go…" Now he waited to be told ' no', but he hoped she'd say otherwise.

Barenziah blinked at the man, confused. "Rush me?"

He grimaced. "Maybe rush wasn't the right word. I mean we've been having fun, right? If it's all right with you, I'd like to keep having fun. I just didn't want you to get sick of the sight of me. A person can only look at this ugly face for so long." He gave her a boyish grin.

The redhead rolled her eyes as a smile tugged at her lips, "I promise you there's no fear of that happening." She felt relieved that he wasn't trying to let her down easy. "You mentioned a gather?"

"Yes." Thankful for an easier topic of conversation he nodded. "I was invited by a friend, but she suggested I bring someone else along. I think we're just an excuse for her to ask some guy she likes." He smirked. "That doesn't mean we can't have fun too."

Barenziah thought about that for a moment as she pushed around some food on her plate. "Were you hoping it was just going to be the two of you?"

He was startled for a moment, then gave a short laugh. "Shards no. Meledei is nice, but she's just a friend." He couldn't handle that much perkiness too often.

"Oh! Goldrider Meledei? She's who we're going with?" Barenziah felt a flash of nerves come over her at the idea of spending the day in the company of the goldrider. Barenziah had heard rumors about how straight-laced and prudish the young goldrider was. **And here I am, the tossed-away mistress of a Lord Holder.**

"Well only if you want to? We don't _have_ to go with her. She's harmless though. Mostly." He smiled.

Barenziah picked at lint on the sleeve of her tunic. "I imagine she might not find my company to her liking."

"Then we'll ditch her and her friend and have a good time by ourselves," he replied. "But I'm sure she'll love you. Although now that I think about it, she does have dubious taste in friends." He wiggled his eyebrows.

This made her laugh, and she raked her eyes over him, "Yes, dubious is the word for it alright." Getting out of the Weyr for a bit did sound fun, and she had to admit, she wanted to spend more time with D'shiel. Since meeting him Barenziah was thinking less and less about Zathris, most days, not at all. "Okay, I'll go. What day?"

He chuckled. "Next restday," he replied. "Please tell me you're free?" He knew someone had to staff the infirmary at all times, even on restdays.

"I'll have to check the schedule and see. If I need to I'll switch shifts with someone." There were at least a couple of other healers that owed her. When she'd first arrived at the Weyr she hadn't had any friends so she'd taken many shifts for others in the infirmary, now it was time for that to pay off.

He nodded. "I hope you can or we might have to bring the gather to you and that could get messy." He'd do it too.

"Do you dance? That's my favorite part of Gathers." She liked the fast-paced dances that left the participants panting for breath by the end.

"I can hold my own on the floor," he replied. "I haven't stepped on too many toes yet." Yet being the key word.

"I must warn you then that I am incredibly good, and that's being modest." Barenziah grinned a little, rather anxious to have D'shiel see her in her element, not like she was at the Weyr.

His mind instantly went to places totally unrelated to dancing, unless it was horizontal. He was suddenly very warm. "Um…" His face turned pink. "I'll just bet you are."

Barenziah's eyes narrowed a bit as she noted the color appearing on his cheeks. "Are you blushing?"

"Who me?" he asked. "Pfft, of course not." Meanwhile he was willing the blood to return to his brain.

"Mmhmm, must be a sunburn then." She teased.

"I'm only human," he muttered.

Barenziah smiled, but let it go at that. "I've got to go, I'm working a night shift this evening. I'll see you around?"

"I hope so," he replied. "Don't work _too_ hard."
