Description: News at Turns End and decisions about the future.
Location: Elsewhere on Pern
Date: month 13, day 29 of Turn 7
Corowal was expecting L'cor and Oria to arrive. He knew their dragons had
landed, but it would take awhile to reach him thru the Gather crowd.
He had sent them personal, separate invitation. He had also commissioned
them a gift: a matching set of beautifully decorated riding straps. Emerald
Falls hold had a saddlemaker who could also make dragonrider's straps. He
was very skilled and artist, when he was not drinking to forget. The straps
had been delivered only two days before, so he had cut the deadline pretty
close. But they were worth every mark Corowal had used to them. He just
hoped his son and his mate would like them.
It might not be easy to mount and dismount a dragon in skirts, but Oria knew
it would make a better impression at Emerald Falls. Degrorth was remarkably
patient with her, even as she grumbled about it,and the fact that a riding
jacket and helmet ruined the effect. But given the fact that invitations had
been sent, and there was going to be dancing it made sense.
L'cor just stood by and watched with half a smile as she struggled
with the skirts and her flying gear. "Told you it would be easier if
you just rode with me."
"Like Degrorth would have wanted to stay at home when there are lots of
people here to make a fuss. I'm betting your siblings will beg for rides
before long." The jacket was rolled up,and the straps removed, to be stored
in the main hall temporarily.
"True enough," he grinned "But first we find father," He offered his
arm and proceeded toward the main area where a all the crowds were
gathered.
She took it,smiling up at her weyrmate as they made their way through to the
gather square.
Corowal saw them coming and went to meet them. "L'cor, Oria. I'm so
pleased to see you could come. Welcome to Emerald Falls's Turnover
Gather," he greeted them warmly.
"Thank you sir," L'cor smiled. "It's good to be here." That was an
understatement. Given his early life he'd never thought to be invited
to such a high profile even at his father's hold.
"Thank you for having us," Oria said with a smile. "We've been looking
forward to coming here since the invitations arrived. You and Lady Felyna
have done an amazing job setting all this up,it looks fabulous."
"Thank you. We have amazing staff that put it all together," Corowal
replied. "The rest should be joining us shortly, the children wanted
to see a juggler. Apparently the traders have man who can juggle
almost anything."
As they walked and talked his father greeted the holders and other
people they met with an ease L'cor envied. Yet he could see how much
of his own dealings with people were quite similar. **The redfruit
doesn't fall far from the tree,** he mused. Soon they were inside the
hold and Corowal's office.
"Sir," L'cor smiled when they were finally alone. "We have some news."
He looked at Oria conspiratorially.
"Oh?" Corowal said and looked from his son to his son's mate with curious
expression.
"Yes," she said with a smile, and a hand drifting over to her stomach. "Sir,
you are going to be a grandfather. We're going to be parents."
"That's wonderful news! Congratulations," Corowal was delighted. He wasn't
so sure how Felyna would take the news. She would be step-grandmother. "This
calls for a drink. Expect for you, my lady," he bowed at Oria.
L'cor chuckled exceedingly pleased with his father's reaction to the news.
He'd been positive with Oria of course but inside he hadn't been sure how
Corowal would take ti. "We're very happy about it ourselves. Of course Oria
will be flying with the Queen's wing now so she and the baby will be in far
less danger."
"Oh, yes, there's that part of dragonrider's life. It's the part you least
want to think of," Corowal said with a slight, worried frown.
"The Weyrwoman doesn't let any pregnant rider take risks, and with my
healer training they'll probably have me in the infirmary during fall
anyway. I can still be of use there," Oria said after a moment.
"Red fruit juice or sitrus juice?" Corowal asked from Oria before returning
to conversation at hand. "I believe the custom of the Weyr is foster
the child after birth. Your baby will be a member of Emerald Fall's
Blood. Have you taken that to consideration?"
"Red fruit please," said Oria. She looked to L'cor for a moment, wondering
about his feelings, it wasn't something that they had really discussed in
any detail. But there would be undoubted advantages for the baby to grow up
here, a comfortable life and a good education and the chance to meet
important people. Although that would also be a possibility with them.
"I hadn't thought of that," he admitted with a shrug and half a smile.
"I've just been getting used to the sensation myself," he chuckled.
"But you're right," he nodded. "We would foster the baby once it's
born."
"I think I'd want someone who loved our baby to look after him or her." Oria
said after a moment. "And I'm sure that would happen here."
L'cor smiled and put his arm around Oria possessively. "Well then," he
smiled at his father. "If she's fine with it, I have no objection. Do
you think Lady Felyna would be alright with it?"
"I do need to talk with her first," Corowal said. "I would love to raise my
grandchild," he continued and gave them the drinks. "Toast to a happy
pregnancy and healty baby."
Oria lifted her glass, "that I think we can definitely drink to."
"Yours would be my first grandchild. That I'm aware of," Corowal said
and touched her glass with the rim of his own.
That interested L'cor in a way he hadn't thought about before. Now he
was in a position to ask questions he'd never have dared before he
became a bronzerider and Lord by the honor due his dragon. Yet he
still phrased it carefully. "So was I your first child, sir?"
"No, Erilite is two Turns older than you are. But I didn't know about
her until few Turns ago when she appeared to my door." Corowal
replied.
"Surprise," L'cor chuckled knowing full well the same might happen to
him with flights being what they were. "I promise to let you know if
you have any other grandchildren," he grinned. The way he felt right
now though he was not inclined to go looking for others. Oria was all
he needed and to his mind she was his wife in all the ways she could
be at the Weyr.
"And I promise to let you know if you have more half-siblings,
expected or unexpected," Corowal replied.
"Well, for the moment it's just me carrying a child, and this one is
starting to make me hungry," Oria looked up to her weyrmate. "Dinner?" she
suggested.
"If you'll excuse us sir?" L'cor bowed his head to Corwal respectfully.
"Have fun you two," Corowal gestured them off with a friendly smile.
