He had to talk to D'hol. He wanted to make sure he had a chance to
explain his reasons and leave on good terms.
He noticed the door to his office was open, so he entered.
"D'hol," T'nom said in greeting as he entered, stopping short when he
realized the wingleader was not alone.
D'hol's face was cold as he stared at N'vanik and his jaw tight. When
T'nom stepped in, his cheek twitched and his attention swung to his
visitor. "Come in, T'nom." He turned to N'vanik. "I think we're done
here."
T'nom stepped in. He could feel the uncomfortable air around him.
Before the Weyrleader left, however, he bravely said, "Actually
perhaps I can speak with you both for a moment." He looked between the
two important men. It would be hard to tell them that he wanted to
leave. He wanted them to respect him and he feared they would be
disappointed, but T'nom knew in his heart that he needed a fresh
start.
"What's on your mind?" N'vanik managed to keep his voice neutral.
T'nom had hurt two women he was quite fond of and that didn't give the
Weyrleader warm fuzzies about the younger bronzerider.
"I've come to request a formal transfer to Dragonsfall Weyr." There,
better to just get it out and on the table. No need to beat around the
bush.
D'hol blinked and sat back, his brow furrowing. He looked at N'vanik
and then back at T'nom and exhaled slowly. "I'd rather not lose you,
T'nom. My wing is short as it is."
_That_ made it more difficult. How was he to contend with that without
being plain selfish. "I'm afraid that some of my personal issues here
have impacted my abilities as a rider. It's my own fault, but I think
it would be best for me to separate from what's happened here to allow
everyone to be at their best when fighting Thread." It was not an easy
choice for him either, but he _knew_ he was distracted by seeing
Meledei and Pierka on a regular basis. He did _not_ want to put anyone
at risk because of that. Leaving his son, however, was going to be the
hardest thing. "I think it is best for those whom I've hurt if I give
them the space they need to heal."
"We don't exactly have bronzeriders to spare," the Weyrleader said,
"But we can manage." He couldn't help feeling a bit happy to see T'nom
go. "I can find you a replacement, D'hol. Maybe not a bronzerider, but
someone."
He wasn't sure, but he thought he sensed something from N'vanik. He
knew the man was friends with Pierka and Meledei, so it probably
wasn't surprising if he didn't like T'nom much.
"I am sorry, but this is the right step for me," T'nom added. "If
there's nothing else, I'll be on my way."
D'hol's jaw twitched. "T'nom is experienced, N'vanik. Can you get me
another bronzerider to replace him?" His eye flicked. "We do have a
couple of new bronzeriders coming in from the next class, but it'll
take time to gain experience. Perhaps I'll take on that J'ackt." He
turned back to T'nom and laid his arms on the table. "I think I know
something of your situation." He had of course, heard of T'nom's
difficulties with Pierka and Meledei and the young child. "It isn't
easy being pulled between several things that you want but can't
have." He too had felt that he had to leave when it became too much to
bear. He exhaled and rubbed at his cheek. "Very well. Since N'vanik
approves, I've little choice. But I'll be glad to have you back should
the situation ever arise that you want to return."
"Thank you D'hol. If I return, I will definitely seek you out," T'nom replied.
"If there's nothing else, I'll be on my way," he looked towards both
men before turning to leave Dolphin Cove behind.
