Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr

P'ton approached Sh'del after the lecture as the Weyrlingmaster had
requested, wondering if perhaps some of his comments had been a bit
too much for the class. They had been discussing politics of Weyr,
Hold, and Hall, a topic on which P'ton held some very definite
opinions. He was rather candid in sharing his ideas and many of his
Holdbred classmates disagreed heartily.
Of course, Sh'del might want to talk to him about chatting up that
pretty brunette during part of the lecture, though the teen felt his
comments to the greenrider were on topic and pertinent. The
instructor might have considered P'ton's aside to be inattentive
or even disruptive. Not that it would be the first time such
allegations had ever been made in regards to the young bronzerider.
"Yes sir, you wanted to see me?"
"Ah yes, P'ton, could you have a seat please?" Sh'del smiled and
indicated the empty chair across from his desk.
"Of course," P'ton replied sitting down and returning the man's smile
with a grin. The Weyrlingmaster certainly didn't look cross so the
teen was hopeful that all was well.
Sh'del ruffled the sheets in front of him, piling them into a neat
stack. "From what I've seen you haven't led any of your groups yet, so
the next sevenday you'll be in charge of your group of three and then
the group of nine. You okay with that?"
"Absolutely," P'ton grinned. "Cirynath and I will do a good job of it,
sir," he assured the Weyrlingmaster. He knew some of the weyrlings
had found this sevenday difficult. The firestone sacks they were
tossing were plenty heavy. Of course P'ton's father had worked him
hard enough back in the Hold that the drills were not overly taxing to
the good sized weyrling.
"I'm sure you two will." Sh'del smiled at the lad before asking, "How
are you finding it? Any problems at all?" It was always good to head
off trouble before it started, and he hadn't had a one on-one with
P'ton in awhile.
"It's going well, sir. No problems. Lots of diversity here and I
can't say that I agree with everyone's point of view, but for the most
part I just leave them to it. Besides, you all keep us too busy to
end up with too much trouble," P'ton replied with an impudent grin.
"You're not finding Weyr values clashing with your Holder ones?"
Sh'del raised an eyebrow, as he himself had had issues with the boy's
older brother.
"Oh, they clash terribly," the youth answered, his grin widening. "But
I'm a dragonrider so the _Weyr_ values are mine while I gladly left my
parents' Holder ones behind. I always found them antiquated and
stuffy anyway. Honestly, I think I should have been born in the Weyr,
would have saved much yelling and arguing with my father."
Sh'del laughed. "This is true. You need to work over your brother on
that one." He grinned and added, "Okay, if you're up for it, I'd like
you and Cirynath to start just after our restday."
"Thank you, sir, we're ready and will do you proud. As far as
R'taran, I know he can be a hidebound stick-in-the-mud but he's a good
guy. He talked my father into bringing me here to be searched and
believe it or not he's my favorite brother. Of course that tells you
the kind of family I'm from," P'ton laughed. "Once I've graduated to
the wings, I'll see about getting him to loosen up some."
Sh'del grinned back. "Before you go, how's Cirynath? Do you have any
concerns at all?" It was always good to check up privately about the
weyrling's lifemates from time to time.
"He's good! I can't believe how he's growing. Sometimes I worry that
he's too much of a glutton, but then I se how he's grown and I figure
he's putting it to good use."
"Well, he_had_to begin to get his body to catch up with his head at
some point, right?" Sh'del smiled gently at the boy, struck in that
moment at how very different his two bronze weyrlings were.
"I had certainly hoped so!" P'ton chuckled. "Many the times I've been
accused of having a big head, but his situation had gotten quite
literal. I guess that part of him just grew first. I'm rather hoping
once he's done growing it's all proportional again."
"He--and you--should be nice." Sh'del checked off a few things on
P'ton's paperwork and smiled. "That's all then, you'll start on the
next day after this rest day. I'll bring you back to my office for a
report after the first day, just to see how you're getting on."
"Sounds good to me."
