He hadn't really sought her out in many many months. In fact he'd done
all he could to her. Yet, somehow the thought that he would leave and
leave behind a grudge did not sit well with him.
He wanted to find a convenient place. One that would afford him a
chance to talk with her a moment, but not be too private either.
The chance afforded itself far sooner than he expected when he took
Taldeth down to the bathing pools and found Meledei and Elleth already
there.
**Now's as good a time as any,** he mused, moving towards her rather
than away as Taldeth splashed his way into the water.
"Hey," he said as he approached, "would you have a minute?"
Immediately, she stiffened. She and Elleth had been enjoy the
sunshine as the dragon enjoyed her freshly oiled hide. The children
who had volunteered to help had all toddled off, tired from the work
it took to oil a large dragon, but satisfied that they'd been able to
take part in the activity. As the silence descended, Meledei inhaled
deeply and let out the breath in a slow, steady stream before finally
responding. "Sure."
He saw her muscles tense and knew what that meant. He took a breath to
keep himself calm. He had a reason for this meeting and he needed to
get through it in order to move forward.
"I know you probably don't want to talk to me," he started, then
quickly kept talking before she could interrupt, "but I needed to say
a few things. First, I wanted to apologize for hurting you_and_ for
avoiding you, but I needed time to deal with all the complications
that appeared in my life. Now, I want to move forward, and moving
forward entails an apology on my part. I never wanted to hurt you and
I'm sorry." He felt like he had rushed to say everything he wanted to
say before she walked away. Now, he took a breath again after his long
string of words.
First. That indicated that he had more to say, but not necessarily
about an apology. Honestly, Meledei wasn't sure she wanted to accept
it. He apologised for hurting her, but the admission of what he had
done_to_ hurt her was conspicuously absent. In her eyes, that was
part of a true, honest apology, especially in regards to something so
serious. At the same time, she really didn't want to get into another
fight, so she remained silent and waited while he paused, her verdant
eyes steady as they watched him.
He had hoped for some response on her part, and with her silence he
felt deflated. Still he pressed onward. He wanted to leave behind
knowing that he had at least tried.
After a slight pause, he finally stated, "I'm leaving. I put in for a
transfer to Dragonsfall. I wanted to tell you in person, myself. You
were my closest friend. I hurt you, I know that. I can't change what
happened, but the least I could do was come to you myself. I hated the
thought of leaving without at least talking to you." He had wanted to
say more, but felt that he'd said enough. Her earlier silence
indicated there was likely no chance of mending any sort of
friendship. He'd accepted that, but he had had to at least talk to
her. He might not agree with all her philosophies on things, and
especially not the_way_ she had accused him of deception, but he
_had_ hurt her and for that he was sorry.
That bit of news brought a furrow to her brow. "Thank you for your
apology." Even if Meledei wasn't sure it was a_full_ apology, it was
at least better than nothing. She wasn't sure he ruly understood what
he did and how he had hurt her, but he did seem truly regretful that
he had done something to hurt her. Although she might have wanted
more, at least he was willing to offer that and Meledei wasn't in the
mood to get into another fight. "But why are you leaving? What about
Kazom?"
T'nom was glad she had accepted the apology. At least now he could
leave without the heaviness he'd carried around for so long.
"I think it's for the best. For me. I feel like I'm_stuck_ here, and
in some of my visits to Dragonsfall G'nir hinted that there was alot
of room for young bronzeriders like me to take on more leadership." He
paused a moment and looked off as if taking in the sights of Dolphin
Cove for the last time. "I will miss Kazom the most, but I've also
made arrangements so I will be able to visit him often, as often as I
can." He looked back at her, his face showing a hint of the sadness
and heartache he had felt these last months. "I just need a restart
Meledei. It will be a fresh beginning for me there." **Without feeling
the binds that seemed to have taken hold of me here and stifled me,**
he added to himself.
Sure, he would miss Dolphin Cove. It had been his home for many, many
Turns, but he felt as though the people he had called friend here were
lost to him now and others seemed to turn away from him after all that
had happened. At Dragonsfall he would be free to start over without
hearing the whispers and gossip that had followed him around Dolphin
Cove for so long.
In other words, he was running away from his problems. Yes, that was
just the right thing to do wasn't it? He made things uncomfortable
for himself and rather than deal with it, he ws going to move as far
away as he can. Although Meledei wished him no ill will, his action
did give a bit more insight into who he was, and honestly, she was
glad things hadn't worked out. When the going got tough, he would
just ditch, and that was not the sort of man she wished to spend the
rest of her life with anyway. "I wish you well then."
**There,** he mused, not really feeling as though he accomplished
much, **it was done.** He had done what he could to not leave ill
feelings behind. "And I wish all the best for you Meledei." Rising, he
gave her a slight nod then calling for Taldeth, he headed off, ready
to begin anew without all the snares that his relationship with her
had left behind.
