Woot!  Yankees for Life!  (accept for the baseball team.  I guess its a prerequisite for living above Boston, you MUST like the Red Sox, even if you don't like baseball.)

Well, the first baseball team I ever noticed was after I moved to Minnesota, and got introduced to the Twins. ;) I suppose on the rare occasions I take notice of sports, I am a Minnesota girl. (Except for college hockey! Maine Black Bears! Woot! I have a JERSEY!)

I'm lucky I speak Standard American Broadcast English.  Everyone can understand me.  But I find I can't always understand everyone else in America.  I had a bit of trouble when I went down to Oklaholma to visit my ex's family.  They had a seriously thick accent and most the time it was fine, but a few times it was like being in a foreign country!

I feel really sorry for the non-American English teachers here in Japan.  They teach SAB English in schools, so sometimes they ask their teachers, even if they aren't from America, to speak with an American accent.  My friend is from Australia and she was complaining about recording a listening test and they had to do it over and over because she was saying "can't" with her native accent.

I have NEVER gotten teased about my accent like I did when I was in Minnesota, Rochelle! They trained my Maine accent just about completely out of me by making so much fun of me. :p

When I was a little kid we had a family friend from Maine visiting.  When Anna called her mother "mum" and said to her "Why don't you call her MOM?  I thought you were an American!"  What can I say, I was a kid.

Well I've always called my mum, 'Mum', but my kids called my dad, 'Dar' - I think the pronunciation would be the same as yours Patrick.  

It was dad's choice.  He didn't want to be called grandad, pop or any of a number of names for a grandfather, and apparently it was what he called his grandfather.

I can't! To this day, in spite of years of effort, I still say "drawring" and "drawr" no matter how hard I try not to. ;) And I used to actually spell idea "idear"...

I can say "drawing" because I learned to talk in Jersey and with my mix of accents it comes out alright.  It's not as bad as my friend Kristin, she pronounces it "drawrling".  Its terrible!  It drives me Crazy!

Yeah, I do that too.  Everyone in my family on seperate occassions have talked about how I have a Japanese accent.  I've had one for the last 8 years.  Just on certain words.  And when I talk to a Japanese person on the phone they always knew because my pronunciation and syntax changed dramatically.  I am fluent in pigeon English now *blush*

*raises hand guiltily* That's the one of the very few words where my Suthun' accent will pop out. And I lived in/near DC for several years, so I was teased to no end. Even now, if I'm not paying attention, I'll say it that way, so I've learned just to refer to it as DC. :D
