In the Pacific Northwest we call soda "pop" a lot.  But I picked up "soda" from my Japanese students back in uni.

Well we don't like you much either. :P  And I haven't heard ANYONE call it "pop"  its always soda.  Thats it, unless you use the brand name.

We had this great Mariners commercial a few years ago with Jeff Nelson and Jay Buener.  They both were on the Yankees team together and then they moved to the Mariners, but Jay came a few years before Jeff.  So in the commercial they went to couples counciling because first they were Yankee teammates, then they were rivlas, now they're supposed to be loving teammates again and they were just so confused about how they should feel about each other... It was so funny!

No, within this country, being called a yankee can be considered an insult, depending on where you live.

Not for me though. :D I'm a yankee born and bred! Me and Patrick will be over there being awesome yankees!

Well, yank is short for yankee. :D

I don't think anyone thinks you're trying to insult them! I just find variations in language to be interesting. And I find people's assumptions about other countrys interesting too. Though I always get so depressed when people say, "But that's what it's like on TV!" Reminds me of when the Austrians asked me if America was really like the show "Married with Children"... *sob*

I was raised a Met's fan and then moved to Boston for 13 years and became a Red Sox fan.

Two reasons to hate the Yankees.

Quote from: "Bree"No, no. Down around where I live now, there are a great many people who refer to every carbonated beverage as coke, whether it's coke, pepsi, sprite... everything!

And those pesky Minnesotans and mid-westerners call it pop!

A few years ago I was helping Heather with her Girl Scout troop.  One girl was carrying a bag with bottle of carbonated beverages in it.  When she complained about the weight and asked what was in it, I naturally said "Soda"

Blank look.

So, I moved my language forward a bit.  "Tonic"

Blank look

**ugh, where am I living now?**  "Pop?"

Nothing

**Oh!  Yeah, I'm in the south**  "Coke"

"Well why didn't you say so, Mr Michael?"

No wonder I have trouble in convesations with Emma and Kaysee, I am not even fluent in my own country.  Whenever people ask if I speak a second language, I tell them I don't even speak Southern

Everything's coke in the South.

"Hey, get me a coke!" "What kind?" "Diet" "Get me one too!" "What kind?" "Root beer if you have it, Dr. Pepper if you don't."

That sorta thing.

When I was in college, I knew a girl who'd moved from Oklahoma, and I remember one time I'd complained cause the waitress at a restaurant brought me the wrong kind of coke, and she was so confused. "How many kinds of Coke are there?" lol

I explained it to her, capital C Coke refers to the actual brand: Coca Cola. Lower case c coke is just a generic term for all things carbonated. Since you can't always tell what sense of the word a person means when they speak (though, sometimes you can) it's good to ask "What kind" in the South when someone asks for a coke.

Woot!  Yankees for Life!  (accept for the baseball team.  I guess its a prerequisite for living above Boston, you MUST like the Red Sox, even if you don't like baseball.)

Yay Red Sox!!! Though the Diamondbacks are WAY better!

Where I come from, we call it soda. That's it, just soda. Nothing special.

Where I live now, being called a Yankee is an insult. Thank goodness I'm a Westerner.

Well, the first baseball team I ever noticed was after I moved to Minnesota, and got introduced to the Twins. ;) I suppose on the rare occasions I take notice of sports, I am a Minnesota girl. (Except for college hockey! Maine Black Bears! Woot! I have a JERSEY!)

Being a northerner, I guess I could be considered a yankee but not a Yankee fan (and don't call AJ that -- like Mikel, he's strictly Mets). I really don't follow most sports, but tend toward those in Philadelphia or PennState (definitely a family thing -- I was raised by sports fanatics). However, I'm truly disappointed that Bucknell has not been invited to be part of March Madness.

Hmm. I've lived too many places. Soda, pop, coke, and fizzy are all the same term to me -fortunately I don't drink any of it. :) I've been a Minnesotan, an Iowegian, a Missourian, a redneck, a skater, a yuppie, a Yankee (and Yank, when south of the Mason Dixon line -that woman was ticked/pissed/blazing/furious/teed off/madder than a hornet), Easterner, Northerner, Southerner, a Foreigner, and a few others I can't quite remember right now.

The result of all this moving and jargon change? I confuse the heck/bejeebers/bejeezus/daylights/life out of people with my "accent" -which is composed of a little bit of every place I've lived, a hefty dose of Minnesota speech classes (since most tv is done in Minnesota dialect, they consider any other style of speaking to be inferior and thus the subject of intensive speech therapy), and a slur I'm told comes more from the fact that I can't hear about five percent of the sounds in the English language. Ironically, ninety percent of my college classmates (and several teachers who used to live there) thought I was from England. I still haven't figured that one out yet...

I am also largely indifferent to sports teams/fandom, although I generally cheer for whatever area I am currently living in if someone forces me to a game -unless of course they are playing someone from where I used to live, in which case I cheer for both!
