Foreign Foods...

Maybe it is the fact that St. Patrick's day just passed. Or that the restuarant where I work just got a new imported Irish beer on tap. But in either case, I very very badly miss some of the things that I used to eat when I did study abroad in Ireland! I would probably kill for a pint of Bulmer's right now!!! It is the most amazing hard cider in existence! And I would really really love some digestive bisquetes! (Despit the strange name they are extremely good cookies!)

So... what do you guys miss from living/visiting foreign countries? Or now that you have moved to a new country, what do you miss from home?

Most of the stuff I liked in the US I can get here, it's just expensive so I don't go buying Oreos that often :(  

Don't drink too much Bulmers though, and if you ever make it top the UK, well I can find you a better cider ;)

There are days where I would kill  :violent1:  for a freshly baked Leibkuchen (a type of German cookie)

And REAL Belgium chocolate, not the stuff that Godiva and the other "good" candymakers make and pretend that it is good stuff. I've only managed to find it once in the states and it was little stale after being imported.

And after trying it at an international drink festival, I've become strangely addicted to a particular brand South African Ginger ale.  :confused1:

Well its not form out of the country but I REALLY miss Tailored Ham on a hard roll with eggs and cheese.  It was the best New Jersey food on the PLANET and I miss it so much.

Once upon a time ... My American online friends discovered I'd never had Oreos.  After a lot of discussion they decided that one of them would send me oreos.

Then various significant world events happened and the person who was doing the sending had to get on her Navy boat and sail off to do her bit.

She left instructions with her husband: Send oreos to Jane at this address.

Which he did.

I received a parcel with packets of oreos in every variety he could find and a gift pack of oreos with four oreo mugs.  The parcel cost US$30 to post!

We still refer to that as the Great Oreo Mountain!

One of my other NZ friends has developed a liking for graham crackers (or Graham's crackers, as she calls them -- possibly b/c her hubby's name is Graham).
I have also introduced her to the joys of peanut butter eggs (both homemade and store-bought) and marshmallow peeps.

I had to look it up to be sure it was the same, but yeah, I remember that -- as Taylor Pork Roll. It's certainly better than Canadian bacon, isn't it?

I'm not much of an alcohol drinker, but when I was visiting the British Isles I stayed in Ruthin Castle in Wales, and they had the best mead I'd ever had.  I think back on that so fondly, and wish they mailed mead overseas

You guys have reminded me! The chocolate over-seas is way better than anything to be found here in the US... I always liked the kind with "whole nuts" (hazlenuts) in it.

And when I was in Ireland for some reason I found it very odd that graham crackers didn't exist there...

*sings* Nuts, whole hazel nuts! Cadbury's take them and they cover them with chocolate! But I can't eat it as it'd make me ill :(

Mead is good, I can only think of one place where I can reliably get it.

Graham Crackers - strangely enough, the places you can get the most american products are the Kosher shops. So Graham crackers come from there.

I miss real hamburgers.  THey have something they call hamburger here, but its really meatloaf.  And cheese.  Good cheese is hard to find.  I miss pineapple on pizza, and Dr. Pepper and rootbeer (though I can get them at specialty stores for $1.50 a can).  I miss Cream of Mushroom soup and I miss coffeemate. I miss lasagna.  I miss Thai and Chinese and Mexican food (you have to go to Tokyo for that).  I miss beer-battered mushrooms.  I miss dipping fries in tartar sauce.  I miss baked potatoes.  I miss ice cream that's flavored something other than vanilla, chocolate, or greentea.  I miss carrot cake....

Yeah, I could keep going... But then again, when I go home, I'll have a huge long list of things I miss in Japan too ;)

Green Tea ice cream really is quite yummy...  It's like a green tea Frapaccino at Starbucks, if you guys have those in the states now...

If it isn't made in New York, with great big bubbles of dough on the rim and enough grease dripping off it to lube all the cars in Manhatten then it is NOT real New York Pizza.
