In PA, the day before Ash Wednesday is known as Fastnacht Day or Donut Day. This year I bought some homemade ones, still warm, made at a little church near here. Yes, they were raised donuts (made with yeast as opposed to cake donuts made with baking powder), but since they were warm, they hit the spot!

Interesting - the day before Ash Wednesday here is Shrove Tuesday better known as pancake day.  Stores adverstise it for days, on the day it self, expect eggs, flour,lemons/lemon juice,sugar and pancake mix to be in short supply!
