"Morning," D'naz greeted his fellow bluerider and Weyrling staff
member. "Are you ready for another exciting day with the weyrlings?"
"Indeed. I'll be sorry to see this clutch go." They'd been
comparatively well behaved as a group.
"Aye, tis hard to let the good ones go, but it's always a joy to see
how much progress they make. We've got a new group to look forward to
though, and a good number at that," D'naz knew the clutch size would
mean a nice group of weyrlings for them to train up.
"It was a fine clutch size. Have you been spending much time with the
candidates?" Since he wasn't officially one of the 'masters yet, he
had a little more time to interact with others.
"Aye. We've much to do to get them ready for the big day." He paused,
and then leaned in a added, "and let me tell you this group coming
up," he shook his head a bit, "some of them just don't seem ready like
the last bunch we just sent to the wings."
"Who are you worried about? I've talked to Jenackt some about his literacy."
"Well, there's Nalra. She's so forgetful that she's missed more
lessons than she's attended and when she _is_ there, it's like she's
not." D'naz shook his head. "Jenackt has made good progress, but I'm
not sure how committed he really is to the whole thing." D'naz
recalled how the boy had wanted to leave but the Weyrleader had
insisted he stay. "Oh, and what about Galrad? Have you ever seen a lad
with such poor coordination skills? I swear he runs into every wall we
pass and can't toss a tiny sack of firestone without getting winded."
D'naz sighed. They still had their work really cut out for them. So
many of them seemed unprepared.
"I'm worried that Nalra will have trouble with visualization
exercises," he said. If she couldn't focus on class, how could she
keep the details straight to go /between/ and come safely out? "If she
misses too many classes, we could ask to have her sit this one out. It
might be a good lesson to her to either focus on the classes, or do
something else."
D'naz nodded. "I think that sounds like a good plan. I'll have some
words with her regarding this. She'll only get another chance to prove
herself now as we're so close to the hatching. If she slips up again
then we'll have her continue her studies and not Stand this time."
"I like that idea. As much as I hate to crush her feelings, it's going
to be worse to lose a dragonet. As for Galrad, do you think we could
improve his skills with physical training, or is it an indication of a
deeper issue, maybe something to ask the Healers about?" Some people
might have all the spirit, but their bodies weren't always right for
riding.
"Let's try both," D'naz replied. "Can you speak to him and see if you
could give him some extra practice with coordination. It might seem
less intimidating coming from you. I'll speak with the healers and
have them do a check to see if there is something more we could be
doing."
D'naz paused, "You know L'pin, you'd make a good Weyrlingmaster
assistant. Have you considered it? You know the spot for Third has
opened up." He gave the other man a thoughtful look. "Think about it."
"It would be nice to be back on the formal staff again," he agreed. "I
feel a little guilty for taking so long off."
"Then do it," D'naz said, reaching a hand to pat his fellow rider and
friend on the shoulder. "Now is the perfect chance to get back into
things. We could sure use your expertise in that role now."
"I'll talk with the leadership, but I hope they're OK with it," he
said. With a clutch about to hatch, why wouldn't they be? Open spots
could be troublesome.
"Good good. I know I wouldn't mind having you as the Third. We work
well together." D'naz grinned happily at the thought.
"I think it'll be a good team." There had been times when he hadn't worked
as well with the others.
"Are you enjoying this transitional period?" he asked.
"You mean between weyrling groups?" D'naz asked. "It's a slower time,
but there's always work to be done.
L'pin nodded. "I find that I do like getting to know the candidates before
they Impress, get a sense of what the clutch dynamics might looks like."
"The best part is that the job is never really the same, you know what
I mean?" D'naz added. "From one day to the next, from one Clutch to
the next. I mean, we have tasks to teach them and they are always the
same, but each group receives them so differently. I'm eager to see
how this group will fare."
"Indeed," L'pin said, thinking that he was looking forward to the challenge.
