Description: A new Master introduces himself
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 8, day 16 of Turn 7
Notes: Mentioned: Ikalis, N'vanik
The sandy-haired man tugged his tunic straight and knocked on the door
his weyrmate had indicated. She had gone off to report her arrival to
the Weyrleader and he was here to report his to the Weyrwoman.
Ikalis was off duty at the moment but there was another drudge helping
her when she needed it but Kendran was sleeping so she went to open
her own door. The Master's knots she recognized immediately so she
greeted him with a smile. "Welcome Master," she said inviting him in.
"Good afternoon, Weyrwoman." He couldn't recall having seen the
Dolphin Cove Weyrwoman before. "Master mason Taine, from Dragonsfall
Weyr."
"Good afternoon Master Taine, I'm Cyradis. We're all very happy and
excited to have you here to help with our little project," she said
leading him to the table where she had some hides she'd been working
with.
"I'm looking forward to it," he admitted. "I need to stay at Weyrs
these days and it's not often there's a project of this size at a
Weyr. I'm honoured to be part of it."
"Well it's much overdue, I think," Cyradis smiled. "Though there is
something to be said for natural living, I find the lack of simple
power at times a bit limiting. Of course, there are places where
stairs, arches, and doors would make our lives that much easier. So,
we're also very glad to have you with us."
"I assume my primary focus should be on supporting work for the
technicians?" Taine asked. "I understand you don't have a master
mason posted here so will I be the senior mason for the Weyr or just
employed for the project?"
"Most likely," she nodded. "We don't, " she added in answer to his
question about their local masons. "You would be senior here and
should you do a thorough inspection and find anything you feel needs
attention we will be delighted to extend your contract for whatever
period of time you wish to remain here.
Cyradis was very serious about attracting and keeping crafters if the
Weyr warranted it.
"Thank you. Will there be any problem with me taking on apprentices
from among the weyrfolk if any are interested?" It rested on every
journeyman and master to keep new blood coming into the craft since
there were seldom enough masoncraft-bred youngsters who wanted to
follow their fathers into the craft.
"Not at all," Cyradis smiled. "In fact I'll encourage it."
"Is there anything else in particular you would like me to look at
while I'm settling in? It's an ideal time for me to assess things -
before I become familiar with them." People had an incredible ability
to accept things, and generally only saw faults and problems with
their environment for a short time after arriving in it before their
minds adjusted and it became normalised.
"Perhaps some of the freestanding buildings in the Weyrbowl," she said
with a nod. "I'm not sure of their age but all our candidates and
weyrlings reside there so I'd like to make sure the buildings are
sound."
"I can check on that," he assured her. "Anything else?"
"I'd say just inspect what you think needs it and give me a list," she
grinned at the man. "But I think you need to go see the Headwoman and
pick some nice quarters before all the Technician's overrun the
crafter's quarters. They're already arriving. You should meet Master
Solis. He'll be leading the Technicians.
"Oh," she added. "We can meet with N'vanik soon as well. I'd like to
keep him in the loop with any of the improvements you suggest."
"That sounds good. I suspect there's going to be a few meetings going
on now we're starting to assemble. Thank you for the welcome,
Weyrwoman. I look forward to working at Dolphin Cove."
"You have no idea how much we've been looking forward to the
improvements to the Weyr." She smiled at the crafter and nodded. "Know
that you _are_ very welcome here Master Taine."
