Another newcomer. Would this one stick around? Cyradis had stuck
around thus far, and she was even Weyrmated, but it was still early
yet. Why did Dolphin Cove have so much change in leadership? It
seemed like people were in and out far too much. At least this one
was coming in without anyone going out. Yet.
Despite her concerns about the chaos that seemed to have plagued the
Weyr in recent turns, Meledei_had_ made it sort of a tradition to
green the new goldriders and offer her assistance. Why would she do
anything different with this one? She arrived at the door of the Weyr,
gift in hand (another thing that seemed to be becoming tradition) and
rapped upon the wood.
Kapera had been arranging her meager decorations on the shelves and
thinking that the walls looked a little bare, so a distraction was
welcome. She pulled open the door and smiled politely at the young
woman there. "Come on in, sit down. I apologize that everything isn't
set up yet."
"No, that's okay." Meledei slipped past the threshold. As with the
others, her
arrival was far too soon for the new resident to have gotten fully
unpacked and
settled in. "I just wanted to come over and say hi - and offer help if
you needed
it."
That was a sweet offer. Thoughtful and nice - it wasn't what she expected
from
another goldrider, and she was pleased so far. "If you could help me pick
out some
nice things from the stores for furniture, that would be wonderful. Oh,
I'm Kapera,
Riyanth's rider," she added, extending her hand.
Kapera hadn't been the first person to ask that and of course, Meledei
wasn't about
to refuse assistance. "Sure, not a problem. I'm Meledei, Elleth's
rider." With
her free hand, Meledei accepted Kapera's, then extended the one that held
the gift.
"Thought you might like a little something for your Weyr."
"Pleased to meet you, Meledei." It was a pretty name. She took a look at
the gift,
and then smiled. The painting was of waves crashing over rocks. "This is
gorgeous,"
she said appreciatively.
"Glad you like it. Thought it might be nice to spruce up your Weyr a
bit." And
Esiah did do good work, Meledei had to admit. "I've got some time if you
need some
help unpacking or anything and it would give us a chance to get to know one
another." After all, they would be working together closely.
"It was thoughtful." She settled it on a high shelf next to a small carved
wooden
box, where it would be easily visible. "Would you be up for a stores run?
I gave
away most of my things when I moved because I didn't know what I'd need in
this
climate," she admitted.
"We can do that now, sure." Meledei would definitely have a better idea
of what
she'd need, and of course items would be more suited for a seaside Weyr.
"We can
enlist some help once you have some things picked out."
"Excellent." Kapera looked around the room to estimate about how much
space she had, then gestured for Meledei to lead. "Elleth was from Loseth
and Nyith's clutch, right?"
"Yeah, that's right." While Elleth had come from a fine dragon,
Meledei honestly couldn't say that much for the rider. "Where are you
coming from?" Rumours abounded, but they weren't always truthful, and
besides, it gave her a way to break the ice and get to know the other
Goldrider.
"Windswept Islands. We were grounded for a Turn, though - Riyanth
caught a falling bronze and was injured." Golds were very good at
catching injured dragons, but a panicking bronze was a very large
creature with nasty talons.
"Ouch." Meledei grimace sympathetically. Elleth hadn't had to do
that, and she'd be limited on who she could catch. The gold was still
large, but tiny for a gold. Browns and smaller colours were the only
dragons they could catch, truth be told. "Glad you guys are better.
It stinks to not be able to fly."
"Being unable to leave the Weyr was rather confining," Kapera
admitted. "When Elleth clutches, does she ever let you leave the weyr,
or does she want you close?"
"She'll let me leave. She's actually really, really laid back for a
gold." Or, as Meledei preferred to think about it, she was just very
confident, both in herself and her rider. "She can be needy, but
generally I have more freedom. I tend to stick close, though,
just..well, just cause it usually feels right."
"I wish I had that freedom." There was a bit of enviousness in her
tone at the thought. "It's nice to have options, even if you don't
exercise them."
"Yeah. Speaking of options, shall we see what options you have for
your weyr?" Meledei kind of liked to look through the stores. Who
knew what treasures they would find?
"That would be marvelous. I was wondering, what do you wear to best
keep cool? Maybe you can help me solve that issue..."
"Of course. Maybe we can find some clothes for you in storage too,
just til you get some made if you prefer." And cooler clothing would
definitely bee needed. Meledei loved Dolphin Cove, but it was
definitely a hot place to be.
