Finding Distractions

Writers: Avery, Chelle

Characters: Chupsin, Talwynn
Description: The healer uses the Weyr to get over his wife.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 6, day 6 of Turn 7
Notes: Mentioned: Genna, Chaysea, Sinla, Onnyth

The Hatching was over. He'd seen Genna and couldn't be
happier for her. This was her moment. He'd sat with Chaysea
and Sinla at the Feast and he did need to chaperone his
sisters since he was the only male there with them to be
respectable at a Weyr event. Still, Chupsin couldn't help
but watch some of the women around him surreptitiously. He
met the eyes of a few. Maybe after they were asleep... He
knew the women of the Weyr were different. And he didn't
have to worry about pregnancies.

Thoughts of Alivya surfaced but he pushed them down. It had
been a long time. She had died and there had been nothing he
could have done. It was a shame about the baby, but he could
have more children. In order to have more, he had to marry
again. To marry again, he needed to know he could perform.
This was a good place to find out.

She'd noticed the way the holder man had looked around the
cavern, and been interested by it. His gaze had lingered on
some of the greenriders, and she made a mental wager with
herself about what he was thinking. Holder men, preaching
one thing, doing another. She'd found them to have an
interesting attitude.

Then the man did look at her, and she found that intriguing
enough. She tossed her head defiantly to show her scars - no
point in dealing with a squeamish man. When he didn't turn
his eyes as so many others had, she revised her opinion
upwards a notch. And when he got up to leave the cavern, she
stood up and slipped out the same door, then looked around.

Coming out from the shadows, he smiled. Tourniquet was
riding on his shoulder, but the bronze firelizard was quiet,
though his eyes whirled a happy blue in the semidark. "Well
met greenrider."

"Well met. Did you enjoy the Hatching?" Polite small talk -
not something she was good at.

"Oh very much so. My niece managed to Impress so all is
well." He didn't mention who she was, though. Better for the
greenrider not to be able to identify him. "Tell me, did you
have anyone to spend time with then? A dance partner
perhaps?"

"I don't dance, but I drank and laughed with my friends.
This Weyr knows how to throw a party."

"Indeed it does. I find myself not wanting the party to end,
though." His tone suggested what his words could not.
Chupsin couldn't come right out and say it like a rider
would. He was more refined and more intelligent than that.
"If you're looking for a nightcap and some company, I have a
small stock back in my weyr," she offered.

"That sounds excellent. I've got to get my sisters settled in their
beds, but I could meet you there later. Perhaps...if you gave me
directions?" He didn't know his way around the Weyr very well in
the living quarters but he could manage.

"Take the stairs to the second level, then run down the left corridor..."
She described it down to an average of paces. "I'll make sure to have
chairs out, make it comfortable."

"Sounds fine. I'll see you later." He didn't know her name and she didn't
know his. Better to keep it that way.

After getting Chaysea and Sinla into bed and making sure everyone was
okay to go home the next morning since the feast had ran late and he didn't
relish any dragon rides in the dark, Chupsin went in search of the right weyr.
A memory used to cataloging dosages and symptoms and medicines had filed
the information away easily. Tourniquet was riding on his shoulder, his whirling
eyes seeing easier than the healer's.

"Evening," she greeted as she let him in. "Your firelizard is handsome," she added.
She was so awful at small-talk!

"Ahh thank you. He's very smart and useful." The creature gave a chirp at being praised.
Lifting up from Chupsin's shoulder, he disappeared to perch on a ledge, ready to wait.
"This is a very well kept weyr. How long have you been at Dragonsfall?"

Something she could answer. "4 Turns. I Impressed at Onnyth's hatching - she's the dam
of the gold egg from today," she added.

"Hmmm so not long. Where were you before?" It was good to know something about this
woman he would like to be intimate with. What was she like? What did she do? Not too
many details but enough.

"Dolphin Cove. Weyrbred," she said with a half-shrug. She'd changed into a loose shift
with a robe over it, rather than her dancing wear.

**Always weyrbred then** Chupsin walked forward and came closer to her. "So you must
be cold here. Perhaps you could use some help getting warm?" And there it was. He had asked.

"I'd love some," she said, bringing her arm up to bring him even closer.
