Demir rose from his father's bedside after a few minutes alone.
Meditation didn't help with grief but it did help him function. So,
when he opened the door and let the rest of them back in he caught his
brother's arm.
"Mirdello," he spoke softly for the sake of the others. "Can I have a
moment of your time?" A tilt of his head urged to leave the room with
him.
"Absolutely," he said, standing to follow his brother outside. "What
can I do for you?"
"Well," he said, "You know I'm going to have to go to Amber Hills and
present the Harper's records to Lord Zathris and start the process for
ratification. But winter is coming fast and I can't wait, so I intend
to ask Kobias to come with me."
"I know this is still early and very premature, but if things work
out, I'd like you to keep the position of Steward."
Mirdello nodded. "I would appreciate that." He rather liked the work he
was engaged in, and the hold was going to need continuity. "How long
do you think the pair of you will be?"
"We'll try to keep it as short as possible but it will take a day to
get there and another to get back. So, probably five days or so."
"I think we can handle that," he said.
"Thank you," he smiled at his brother. They'd never been quite as
close as he felt to Kobias, but by all accounts Mirdello had proven
himself a fine Steward. He felt he could trust his judgement. "And
would you also put father's Memorial together for when we return?"
"That I can do." His jaw clenched at the thought - it wasn't going to
be a pleasant duty, but someone had to do it, and he didn't want to
trouble Mirdella. His mind started clicking through other practical
duties. "We'll also have to figure out the rooms...but I'd rather wait
on that till you get back."
"I'm sorry to put this one you," he said and grasped his brothers
shoulder. "But I know you are the best one to handle it while were
gone."
Agreeing felt like too much ego, so Mirdello just nodded. "I'll make
lists of what will need to be done and figure out where to allocate
the tasks. In the meantime, do you mind if I reassure anyone who seems
too worried? You're not planning on radically shaking anything up...?"
Demir's eyes popped open, "Oh please do reassure everyone." before
today he'd only thought about the livestock and the farms. He hadn't
planned on becoming Holder. This was as much a surprise to him as it
seemed to everyone else. "Everything should go on as it has done. If
you think anything needs to be changed we can talk about it when
Kobias and I get back from Amber Hills."
He nodded at the order. "I'll prepare some suggestions, but don't
worry, we'll ease into it."
"Thank you Mirdello," he smiled. It was good to get these few things
off his mind. "If you think of anything that needs doing please let me
know. I need to go find Kobias and get ready for the road tomorrow."
"The pair of you pack your own things; I can arrange for the travel
provisions, if you wish."
"I seem to be thanking you a lot," Demir smiled. He'd never had anyone
just take care of things for him, at least not since his wife had
died. "And for good reason." Sadness for his fathers passing still
weighed on him along with the conditions but he didn't think he needed
to worry about that right now.
"That's what family is for," his brother agreed.
