Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 3, day 24 of Turn 7
Genna was for once minding her own business as she ate her meal. Where she usually found someone to chat with while eating, she was exhausted today and felt like a quiet meal. Munching contently on her tubers, she watched the people around her with vague interest.
Tourniquet had disappeared, spending his time with the Weyr's other firelizards. Chupsin didn't mind it at all. The healer had finally finished with Lady Yanley and was ready to eat before going to get some rest. He looked exhausted. He was quite tired and didn't even notice when he walked right by Genna to get his plate.
Genna shook her head in wonder as Chupsin passed, thinking herself crazy for a moment. What would Chupsin be doing here? But when she looked again, she couldn't deny it was indeed her uncle passing by. "Uncle Chupsin!" she called out before she could stop herself. Had he come to check up on her?
Hearing his name, he turned slowly, looking slightly confused. Then he saw her. He was so exhausted, it took a moment before things clicked. Then he was surprised. "Well look who it is. Enjoying yourself hm?"
"Yes, I am," Genna replied rather cheerfully. She was quite proud of how she had been coping on her own since her arrival at the Weyr. "And how are you holding up, Uncle? Missing me already?"
"Maybe so. You do realize now that both my niece and my wife are gone, I'm all alone aye?" Guilt trip her. She deserved it. "And tired."
Genna frowned slightly, recognizing the guilt trip, but unable to let it slide. "You do look tired," she said, deciding to change the topic as quickly as possible. "What brings you here?"
"Lady Yanley had her baby, finally. So I'll eat, then rest, then go home." He looked longingly at the food he had been going to get. "You look well enough." He hoped life at the Weyr didn't agree with her too much.
"Oh!" Genna's attention was immediately drawn. "How did it go? Are she and the babe alright?"
"Took a long while, but everything's fine. She'll have to recover a bit but there's nothing to be concerned over. I don't know if she'll be able to make milk, however, so we'll see." That was a concern when the mother was older. Sometimes it just dried up.
"That's good, I'm glad it went alright," Genna nodded. "Is, eh.. the father taking an interest?" The holdbred part of her was still worried the rider would walk out on Yanley without a second thought.
"Seems like. I'm told it's his second son so I suppose he's happy about it for now." Chupsin himself wasn't too keen on the dedication of riders to their women. Everyone knew how Weyrlife worked. Still, It was Yanley's decision to make and she had brought herself here with her choices. There was nothing he could do.
"I hope it stays that way," Genna sighed with a shake of her head. All this 'love', it was a tricky business and she began to wonder if it wasn't better left alone.
"We'll see. She made her choice, just as you made yours." He said it casually, but it was clear that he didn't necessarily approve of it-at least the way in which it was done. "But like I said, things seem to be working out for you, so maybe she'll have a better life here."
"I hope so, yes," Genna nodded, though she wasn't too sure herself. In her own opinion, because she hadn't packed up her things because of love, Yanley was a lot more likely to be disappointed in the end. "Will you come to the next Hatching here, uncle? To see me stand?"
"Perhaps if I can. I suppose your mother and father will be here." It would depend on if Lord Zathris gave him leave. As the Hold's healer, Chupsin couldn't always get away. He understood and had settled down for the most part, not travelling like he used to as a junior journeyman.
Genna made a little face at the mention of her mother. She really didn't want that hypocrite marring what might be the most beautiful day of her life. But she couldn't go around to admitting that out loud. No one could ever know the depth of her despise, or they might start to expect her reasons for leaving. "I hope you will make it. If I do impress, I would want you to see it."
"If you do, you will begin a life that will have no room for me or any of us. You will become the Weyr's property. Never your own, Genna." He had found himself waxing more thoughtful as of late. Chupsin didn't really know why. "We'll see if I can get off, though. Not always easy depending on patients and the short notice of a Hatching."
"I think I'm better off being the Weyr's property rather than belonging to someone who pretends to love me for the sake of decency," Genna said a little too bitterly for her usual demeanor.
He misunderstood what she was saying. "Genna, you could have married for love. There were quite a few suitors that would have had you if you had wanted any of them."
"Yes, suitors," Genna wrinkled her nose in disgust, she was glad she wouldn't be hearing much of that anymore. "I can't see myself loving a 'suitor'. Maybe I'm just not the loving kind, I don't know. Over here you get to figure that stuff out for yourself and I'm grateful for that chance."
"Aye and in the Weyr relationships generally do not last. So remember that your idea of love and forever will not be the same of folks here." He realized he really needed to eat and get in the bed. His body was screaming. "Well niece, I am afraid it's time to go get my meal and then sleep. My body is telling me no more." His eyes might have softened just a bit. "You know where I am and there are a few here who could reach me if you needed. Like the Weyrhealer."
"Thank you uncle," Genna smiled, taking that as some kind of peace offering, even if she didn't know why they had been at war. "Enjoy your meal and rest well."
