After he heard the news that he'd been invited up the the private
apartments he finished the rest of his excellent sandwich pretty
quickly. "You ready," he smiled at Oria.
"Are you sure you want me to come?" she asked.. She had almost expected that
L'cor would have that opportunity, but not necessarily include her in it.
"I do," he said and reached for her hand. "I'm going to need the
morale support." He grinned and led her toward the great stairs and up
to the reception room he'd been instructed to go to. "Good afternoon
sir," he said smiling as he walked in.
"Afternoon, L'cor and Oria," Corowal replied. He was surprised to see the
greenrider. He had met her once during the Hatching Feast.
"Milord," Oria said politely. "It is good to be here."
"My training has progressed enough that Tonuth and I can make trips
away from the Weyr with permission. Oria was nice enough to volunteer
as my guide today," L'cor smiled by way of explanation. "I'd wanted to
visit on your birthingday but there was Fall so..." his voice trailed
off.
"That's very kind of you, thank you," Corowal replied with a smile.
"We had cake on dad's birthday, you missed it!" Corolia declared loudly.
L'cor smiled at the girl. "Boy I sure missed out," he said. "But since
there was Threadfall, I kind of had to stay at the Weyr. I'm L'cor,"
he said as gravely as if he were being introduced to a great lady.
"And you must be Corolia." He'd never met his half siblings but had
learned their names. He held out a hand for her fingers so he could
bow over them appropriately.
Corolia had been taking lessons from Felyna and preformed a perfect
curtsy. "Nice to meet you, sir," she articulated carefully. Ofewal
just rolled his eyes at his little sister's antics.
"And you, M'lady," he answered as he bowed over the tiny hand as
gravely as if she were Lady Felyna. Of course he didn't miss the
rolled eyes of Ofewal and winked at his father. "You," he said to the
boy. "I think you might need a ride on a dragon."
"Can I ride it too?" Felcoron asked eagerly. Being five, he was still
often told to be too young for everything fun.
L'cor looked to Corowal for some clue though children at the Weyr got
short gliding rides from all the time. "Well I do believe you'll have
to ask your father on that one."
"Daddy?" Felcoron gave his father an appeling look.
"I have nothing against it if Tonunth is willing. He's still young, not
fully grown. I don't know how many people he can carry," Corowal answered.
"Degrorth can take some people as well, she likes to give rides, " Oria
said. "I think she gave L'cor his first dragon ride."
"Can I ride too?" Corolia asked and looked Oria. The thought of dragon rider
excited her but the thought of riding with unknown older brother made her
shy. She would feel more comfortable with a woman rider who was _supposed_
to be total stranger.
"Mee too!" Wallia cried with a bounce.
"No, sweetheart, you can't," Corowal said gently and picked the blind little
girl up.
"Are you sure we can't organise something, I'm sure Degrorth would be very
careful if someone held her tightly?" suggested Oria. "Maybe she can just
sit there for a few moments to get used to it, then we can try a ride when
she's a bit bigger."
As was always the case, her friends among the staff kept her very well
informed of the goings on of the Hold. In particular, where it
concerned her husband and the children.
Upon hearing that Corowal's son had arrived, Felyna paused in what she
was doing - laying out an event calendar for the staff - and
considered.
Well why not? She wanted to see this son of Corowal's.
Straightening her skirt, she tucked a piece of blond hair behind one
delicate ear and headed toward her husband's private reception room.
She slipped into the room unnannounced - she had never minded walking
in on her husband - just as Oria, a familiar greenrider, suggested
someone holding Wallia tightly.
Her eyes landed on the other dragonrider in the room.
She stopped a moment, and took a second look.
It could have been her husband, when he was younger. She had seen
the portraits.
Too well schooled to let her amazement show on her face, instead it
was a warm, happy smile - at least for the children, anyway - and she
said lightly, "Hello, children." Her smile turned to the young
bronzerider after a friendly nod to Oria. "You must be L'cor."
He didn't miss her when she entered like a ray of sunshine on a cloudy
day. Of course he'd heard descriptions of his father's Lady but they
didn't do her justice. Hoping he didn't looked too stunned and swept a
deep bow. "My Lady," he rose with a smile. "We were just discussing
dragon rides."
"Felyna, I'm glad you could join us," Corowal said, but there was
guarded look in his eyes. Erassa's shadow still loomed between them
and the situation had the potiential to a social disaster.
There was absolutely no way Felyna would ever let this situation
become a disaster of any kind. If there was anything she excelled at,
it was acting as if things were perfect when they were _not_.
Her smile sparkled with the same customary brightness, shadowed with
caution when she glanced at her husband. "Hello my husband. I am
happy to meet this fine example of young bronzerider." She offered
Corowal a smile, mostly for appearance, though some the previous
warmth and love that had existed was clearly evident. Every movement
betrayed grace and poise, all learned at her mother's knee from the
time she could walk, especially when she proved likely to grow into
the beauty she still was today.
"L'cor, its such a pleasure! Please call me Felyna. You are part of
the family, after all." She extended her hands to him, the smile
warming. "Dragon rides is it? You will sweep the entire family off
their feet by promising rides on that handsome bronze I saw outside.
Rides sound lovely." She glanced away from him for a moment to smile
at the happy faces on the children.
He seemed like a nice young man, she thought, though a flicker of
sadness danced through her smile as she thought of Felwal. She saw
his perfect little features in L'cor's face. She freed one hand to
touch the locket she never removed. Would he have grown up to look
as much like his father as L'cor did?
"Felyna," he repeated and bowed over her hand oblivious to the
undercurrent between her and his father and brushed his lips across
her knuckles. "Ma'am this is my friend Oria of green Degrorth who has
volunteered to help us today. If we can't get everyone aboard at once,
I'm sure we can manage multiple rides. Though we are expected back at
the Weyr in a few candlemarks."
"Well, then, let's not waste time. Children, you need warm clothes if
you're going to fly," Corowal said and the children rushed out to get
their coats. Corowal watched after them with bemused smile before
turning towards the two dragonridres. "Just short circle around the
hold and not too high is enough for them. I have
feeling this is a day
they won't forget. Thank you very much."
"You should dress warmly too sir," L'cor smiled back. "And Lady Felyna
as well if she wishes."
"L'cor is right, ma'am," Oria said addressing the Lady Holder. "It isn't
quite as as warm as you think it will be in the air."
