R'enh watched Hygalia and the holder who'd latched onto her with
amused interest. He recognized the signs of her boredom and attempts
to brush the fellow off. But the man just wasn't getting the hint.
Of course she was more than capable of cutting the man to the quick
but with G'nir on the other side of the room he had a little opening
to run interference. So, he put his drink down and crossed to where
she was standing.
"Good evening Weyrwoman," he smiled at her, and then at the holder. "I
believe this dance is mine?" He held out his hand.
"Wingsecond R'ehn," she said with a grateful smile. "I'm so sorry I was
neglecting you. I was just listening to this Holder's fascinating story
and lost track. I suppose I shall owe you _two_ dances to make up for
it. If you will excuse me, sir," she said with polite curtsy as she
reached for the bronzerider's hand.
He led her away in a very proper manner but R'enh was rather well
known for his dancing skills and once he got her to the dance floor he
spun her out and then spun her back into his arms. "You ready for
this?" The tune was lively and he had a twinkle in his eye.
"Turns of training to be the perfect Lady Holder, I _better_ be," she
said with an answering smile. Truth be told, however, dancing was not
her favorite past time. Though she could definitely more than keep up
with a partner, the candlemarks spent reluctantly learning the art had
stolen any joy she might have taken in the past time. She much
preferred a quiet corner and a beer. But, it was just part of the job,
and she owed him at least something for the heroic rescue! "Thank you
for saving me from that Holder. There's only so many different theories
on breeding porcines that I can handle for one night."
"You're very welcome," he smiled. He had danced with Hygalia many
times and knew she was good though she didn't really care to dance
that much. "But don't worry, I won't hold you to the second dance.
Well unless you give me the porcine escape signal."
"You're so good to me, R'enh," she said with her adoring damsel smile
that she trusted that he would understand in jest. In truth, he had
been her savior from many an unwanted partner. "Seriously, I don't know
how these people corner me so quickly."
"Don't tease me lovely," he chuckled. "It's unfair to my poor heart."
He couldn't really recall how their running private joke had started
but it made for some pressure free entertainment when they inevitably
encountered one another at this or that event. "They corner you
because you're standing still, silly goose. Gotta keep moving," he
grinned as he dipped her.
"Thus the dancing," he said as he brazenly perused her cleavage before
bringing her upright again.
She shook her head, clicking her tongue in resignation. What else would
R'enh do? She was not in the least bit shocked or embarrassed. Long
ago she had accepted that women had breasts, and men would inevitably
look at them. But really, didn't women look too? They just don't make
such an obvious show of it, is all. "And who will save me from ill
mannered Wingseconds?"
His lips twitched in humor. "They really are lovely Hygalia but we
both know this is as close as I get. Can't blame me for appreciating
your... assets, can you?"
"I never said I blamed you," she pointed out. "I know you will behave
yourself, and you know what will happen if you don't." That had point
had been made abundantly clear between them from the start, and in a way
that understanding had given them more freedom to enjoy each other's
company than before.
"But I'll take it to the edge and leap at the chance if it's ever
offered," he grinned a waggled his eyebrows. Hygalia could be fun
company when she wasn't keeping him at arms length. "Let's get you a
nice beer," he said in her ear as the dance ended.
Hygalia smiled radiantly, tickled by the fact that he knew her so well.
"Now, R'enh, you know that's not a lady's drink. I will have a nice
sweet wine, if that's all right." As much as she preferred beer to any
drink on Pern, except perhaps klah, she still had to maintain her public
image, after all.
He grinned back. "Well it _is_ my birthingday and I'm having a party
later, to which you are welcome of course. But, I also happen to have
some beer there you could drink with no one the wiser. I'm certain
you wouldn't be bothered by any... porcine concerns there."
She shrugged a shoulder daintily. "I do have a present for you that I
might at some point need to drop off at your weyr. Perhaps I can take
you up on the offer of a beer then."
His smile turned genuinely warm. "Why thank you Hygalia," he said.
"Allow me to escort you." He offered his arm and then made his way
toward the refreshment table which was located conveniently near the
exit.
