~*~ Skipping ahead again ~*~
Yanley pushed. Sweat trickled down her face and the words she used were
definitely _not_ ladylike. It was amazing that woman in her position even knew them. She had moved back to bed so Chupsin could check her progress and had been unable to return to the pool for the baby started to come out right _then_. She squeezed D'ale's hand with all her strength, hanging on to it.
D'ale winced but bore it with a smile. "You're doing great sweetheart," he said, completely ignoring the rather colorful language she was spouting.
Positioning himself at the foot of the bed, Chupsin saw the head. The
presentation was good and the baby didn't seem to be in too much
distress. Yanley was doing fine. "Yanley, when you have a contraction,
push at the same time. Let your muscles
work for you. That way you don't get as tired. It won't be long now.
D'ale give her the water if she needs it along with a cool compress on
her forehead please. Tavia, I'm going to need the scissors and the
clamp for sure if you can have those ready."
"Yes, sir," Tavia said and busied herself readying the needed
implements which she'd cleansed with redwort along with a fine needle
for stitches if they were needed. She had also prepared a small area
where she could examine the baby while the doctor dealt with the
placenta. A small fish bladder with a bone fitting to suck the mucus
out of tiny nose and ears was among her tools.
D'ale nodded and started doing exactly what Chupsin told him with his
free hand. He pulled damp dark tendrils of hair out of her eyes and
smiled lovingly wishing he could do more to help her through this long
ordeal. When the next one hit he put his arm around her shoulders to
support her as much as he could.
"It's taking forever..." Yanley moaned. She was getting exhausted. Her
birth process had already taken almost whole day.
"Yes it has been long, but it is not over. And you will not quit."
Chupsin's eyes flashed, telling her that he wouldn't quit either. The
healer had been awake for the entire time and was almost as tired as
she was, though he didn't let on. "Now push and get that baby down."
When the head presented itself, Chupsin gestured to Tavia. He took the
blade after carefully numbweeding the area below the head. Making a
careful incision, there was some blood, but it wasn't much compared to
rest that would come with the baby. Handing Tavia the tool, he went
back to delivering. "I have the head. Just a few more pushes and it'll
be out."
Yanley groaned and pushed until she felt like her muscles were going
to burst. Darkness swam around the edges of her vision. Thistle
crooned encouragingly.
D'ale couldn't help but strain with her as he supported her back. His
chin poked over her shoulder from where he sat behind her and his face
lay alongside hers. "You can do it sweetheart," he said softly.
"Almost there."
Tavia stood near Chupsin waiting to hand him the next thing he might need.
A head filled with dark, wet hair popped out. With the head out, rest of
the body slipped out more easily. The relief almost made Yanley faint.
All of a sudden, his hands were full of a squirming slimy gooey mess. Chupsin hurried to cut the cord and then handed the baby over to Tavia to
clean and check over quickly. "It's a boy! Congratulations!" Now he had to work with Yanley to get the afterbirth passed since the baby looked to be all right for the moment.
Tavia took the little guy with practiced ease while he gave a strong
wail of protest at being expelled from his nice warm mother. She
quickly suctioned his nose and mouth and wiped most of the birth gunk
from his face. He continued to protest of course and that was a good
thing. His lungs needed the exercise. Once all his reaction seemed
good, she wrapped him up in a birth blanket and brought him back to
Yanley with a smile.
Yanley had a radiant smile despite being on bring of passing out of
exhaustion. She reached her arms to take him. "Ooo, my baby, I can't
believe you're here. My little Daley."
D'ale grinned from ear to ear and laid a huge kiss on his weyrmates
cheek. "You did great my love," he hugged his new little family. One
hand caressed the baby's head. "Hello there Daley."
Chupsin was quiet for some time, not intruding on the family's happiness.
He sent a message off through Tourniquet to let Taren know how things had
ended up. When sufficient time had passed, he approached Yanley. "Yanley,
the babe is healthy and whole. You're going to need stitches, but
things are swollen
right now so I've instructed Weyrhealer Taren to follow up. You will also need
to rest. Beyond very light duties, you should take it easy for the
next few days.
You will be sore and tired. You need to eat to feed him though." His eyes met
the dragonrider's, to let him know that she would need help. "Is it
possible that
you have any distant relations here at the Weyr that might assist you?
I seem to recall
some cousins..."
"Don't worry about me, Chupsin, I'm in good hands," Yanley said while the baby was making demanding gestures towards her breasts. "And thank you so much. To coming all the way here," she continued and gently guided the baby's mouth to a right place.
