Part 2 of 3
It didn't take the healer long to get his things together though he
did dress for cool weather and flying. Chupsin was elated at the
prospect of finally delivering a baby, though he was a bit grumpy
knowing it was going to be staying at the Weyr. Tourniquet followed
the brown dragon, ready to assist his pet as needed and eager to see
the other firelizards of the Weyr.
Tavia had come right away when Glory sent the picture of the laboring
woman. She brought bowls and towels and clean bundling for the birth.
While the gold flit sat with whirling eyes humming with the rest of
the gathered fair.
D'ale strode back into his weyr after the healer. "Yanley?"
"Here!" Yanley said. She was pacing back and forth and trying to find a position
where her back would hurt less. She had heard that contractions could be felt on
back-side too, but experiencing it herself, it still came as surprise.
"Lady Yanley, I'll need to make a quick examination to see how far you
are if you don't mind." He noted the other woman and wondered who she
was. Seeing rider knots, he looked to the brownrider in question
before noting she had craft knots as well.
So this was the midwife. He didn't know her and wondered if that would
be a problem. Setting his back down on the empty table, he began to
unpack the things he might need even as he allowed her to get
comfortable with a level of modesty. He wondered if the brownrider was
going to stay. Holder men usually didn't.
Tourniquet, on the other hand, was quite friendly to Glory. The bronze
made a quick landing and jockeyed for a position before chittering in
her direction.
"Of course, Chupsin. I'm glad you're here," Yanley said.
~*~ several candlemarks later ~*~
Tavia pushed the door open with her foot as she carried the laden tray
into the weyr. Once she had it on the table she went and pulled the
brownrider from where he sat next to their patient holding her hand
and worrying.
"You need to eat. This is going to take awhile yet." She nodded to the
doctor, "You too."
"Okay," said D'ale and reluctantly let Yanley's hand go. The mention
of the food made his stomach rumble.
Chupsin's eyes raised. Yanley was progressing, but slowly. There wasn't
much he could do to speed up the process since labor had officially begun.
Still, he did have a few things that could help regardless. "Yanley, it might
help if you take a warm bath. Sometimes it makes it a bit quicker." He didn't
offer to assist her to do so, instead looking over at the female rider.
"I wish this was over already," Yanley said with frustration. She
couldn't walk around any longer and the contractions were now real
ones...and painful. "I'm not sure I can eat, but I sure can use the
drink," she continued. Just the thought of food made her stomach
rebel.
Tavia had already eaten so she went back to their patient with a
smile. "Do you want to try the bathing pool? It might help with the
pressure too. Once we get you in there, I'll grab you a drink." She
knew digestion pretty much stopped when a woman was in labor so she
was fairly certain Yanley wasn't hungry. "I can give you a nice back
massage too. That might help as well."
"I'll try that," Yanley said and tried to roll herself up from the
bed. She needed help for that.
Tavia immediately reached out to assist and it was only a short way to
the warm waters of the bathing pool. She stepped backwards down into
the water while holding on to the woman in labor. "There now, just
float and I'll get a towel to rest your head." She quickly made good
on her promise to provide a pad against the stone.
"Thank you," Yanley sighed. The water seemed to help.
