Date: month 9, day 23 of Turn 3
M'kel had started the habit of watching the weyrlings drill. The blooding would be soon enough and he wanted to start to get a feel for the weyrlings. Still having some time he lingered as the class broke up.
D'cal came to land nearby. He slid off Aosorath's blue neck and began scratching his neck and praising him for his great manueverability.
"That's right, boy. You're faster and more agile than any blue I've seen yet." The weyrling began working on the buckles that held his riding straps on, still murmering words of love and encouragement. He didn't even notice the Wingleader's approach.
"Hello D'cal, it is D'cal, isn't it?" M'kel said as he approached the weyrling. "I might have to agree with you. Aosorath was quite impressive in the air just a moment ago."
"Thank you, Wingleader," the weyrling said with a broad smile. Finally, a good word from a bronzerider! "Congratulations on your promotion, sir."
"Thanks lad," he said with a smile. "You're facing your own promotion soon, are you not?"
"Well, I'm graduating, if that's what you mean. But we have to survive Blooding first." After all he had seen in the terrible threadscore accident, the thought terrified him that sometimes riders didn't come back.
"Yes, exactly right d'cal. The way you put it though, 'survive', is a bit morbidly. Most weyrlings _do_ survive. And some will get injured, but even the best riders won't walk away unscathed if a clump falls akwardly." After the words were out of his mouth, M'kel wondered if his wording was a bit off.
"Forgive my morbidity, sir. But none of us can forget what happened.
In The Fall, that is." Even the weyrlings hadn't all escaped unscathed.
"You're right d'cal. We must always remember, but yet move on. I just hope that people don't worry too much, and hold back," he smiled again. "But that goes for Weyrlings _and_ riders both.
"Yes, sir. We will do our best, of course," D'cal nodded as he pulled the straps from the blue's neck. "And I know Aosorath will take care of me, and we'll come through it unscathed."
"Now thats a good attitude," he said, "Always trust in your dragon, and he will take care of you." He thought to leave it at that, but hesitated. "If you have any questions, or concerns about the blooding, or the fighting wings, feel free to ask." He swept his hand about, "I'll be observing trainning a bit more, so I'll be around."
Now why couldn't D'cal be assigned to _his_ wing? But it seems it had already been decided that he would have J'darin as a wingleader.
Shards. "Thank you, sir. I will keep that in mind."
"Your welcome," M'kel said, giving d'cal a wave as he backed away. "I have to have a little chat with Y'sani now. Good day to you, and Aosorath."
