Planning To Stand

Ameala was still reeling from the shock of it all. The move to River
Bluff, the dragons, but most especially being told she was a good
Candidate to Stand for a hatching. She and Fitchen had talked about
it. She was still stunned by it all.

The searchrider had informed her she'd need to meet with the Weyrwoman
if she actually desired to Stand. That was how she'd found herself
seeking out the woman in charge of the Weyr. Ameala had had dealings
with the Lords and Ladies at Amber Hills, but not on a regular basis.

She spent most of her time with the other regular folk. **How does one
address a Weyrwoman?** She wondered as she made her way to the office.

Someone had sent a message and informed the Weyrwoman of Ameala's
intent. When the young girl received word that the Weyrwoman would
meet with her, she thought she'd just about faint.

**Am I really doing this?** She wondered for what had to be the
thousandth time. And then she was there. All the fretting and worrying,

and now she had to face the future before her and commit to a decision
once and for all.

With such a backlog, Rhosyn was not in the best relaxed mood, though she
had recently had plenty of rest. The truth was, she was still in a bit
of pain but
she was stubbornly going back to work anyway. Sitting in her office, she looked
very casual since all she had on was basically a white sheet tied
around her since
that was less abrasive on her skin and not as hot.

Ameala reached the room she'd been directed to and raised her hand to knock.

The sound echoed for a few moments and then Rhosyn gave up, realizing she was
going to be interrupted. Well maybe the person on the other side of
the door had food.
That could be good. "Who is it?"

The rider who escorted her, gestured she should enter. With his
prompting, she did.

"M'lady?" She said, not sure how to greet the Weyrwoman. "My name is Ameala."

"I'm not a Lady. Call me Rhosyn or Weyrwoman." Gesturing for the female to have
a seat, she looked disappointed at the lack of food. "I understand you
came to the
Weyr and that you were Searched. So what do you want to do about it?"

Ameala took the seat, feeling as though she had already made one blunder.

"My husband and I discussed things, and we both feel it would be
dishonorable not to Stand when such an opportunity was presented to
me." She was using the words she'd rehearsed on her way here, hoping
it would be the right thing to say. **I'm also eager to see what this
will be like,** she added quietly to herself. Ameala's sense of
adventure had her intrigued. She loved her life with Fitchan, but
she'd been hoping for something more. Perhaps _this_ was the something
more she needed in her life.

"You do realize if you do decide to Stand that you must cleared
physically by the
healers and then separated from your husband, perhaps for a very long
period of time
if you do Impress?" **And maybe longer since marriages don't work well
in the Weyr**
Rhosyn watched her, wondering how much this woman knew of Weyr life and being a
candidate.

"I..." Ameala started and stopped. She and Fitchan had discussed some
things, but not all that the Weyrwoman stated. "I can get a physical
from the healers, but are you saying I cannot even _see_ my husband at
all? I was informed that certain....things....can't be done when the
dragons are young, but I assumed I could at least _see_ him." Ameala
was confused and uncertain. Perhaps she should talk with Fitchan
again, but they'd agreed that she should go through with this honor.

"It's up to the Weyrlingmaster but a new dragonet is very demanding and very
possessive and introducing your husband who you would obviously care for very
much at an early stage might confuse and upset the dragonet." Rhosyn knew
how Vista Point had done it, but H'vack might do differently. Then again Orlaith
was so precious, she hadn't needed to risk anything. "You would see
him at the Hatching
feast of course. After that, in the first few sevendays of your
training, you don't really
leave the barracks much." **She won't really have time to leave the
barracks between
feedings, oilings, and all of that**

"I see," Ameala replied slowly. "We haven't really discussed that part
much, but my husband and I _did_ discuss what an important opportunity
this is. I will talk to him more about what you've just told me, but
before I came here, he told me that whatever it would take we would
do." She didn't know if that would be good enough for the Weyrwoman or
not, but she _had_ made up her mind that she would Stand this time.
She didn't actually expect to be chosen, but the honor was too great
to ignore.

"And what do you know of dragonriding?" It was hard to get a sense of
who someone
was in so short an amount of time but Rhosyn was expected to make this judgment

regardless.

"To be honest, not as much as I should," Ameala replied, feeling her
cheeks heat up. "I know they are the protectors of Pern and without
them Thread would destroy us all. I know that they are more important
than anything else. My family always shared stories with me growing up
about the virtue of the riders and that we should do our part to
support them in any way possible. I know that the life of a rider is
not easy, and it's very different from Hold life." She knew her
knowledge was limited, but she hoped it would be enough, and if not,
then at least she had done her family proud by not shirking the
responsibility that had been thrust upon her when she'd been Searched
by B'sil. **At least I'll have tried,** she thought to herself as she
waited for the Weyrwoman's next words.

Considering this quietly for some time, the Weyrwoman shifted slightly in
her seat. Rhosyn thought about that and kept looking at the girl. "What if...
what if I gave you time? You can attend lessons and learn more about Weyrlife
and what riding really is and then when the Hatching is closer, we can talk
about things? Because as it stands now, I don't think you would be ready if you
did Impress, Ameala."

"Alright," Ameala replied. It was actually a perfect solution. She
would progress towards what she and Fitchan had discussed if it was
meant to be, and in the meantime she could still talk things over
further with her husband.

"I think that's a perfect solution. Thank you Weyrwoman." She smiled

brightly at Rhosyn, no longer feeling as timid and uncertain as she
had when she'd first entered.

"Very well. Report to the Headwoman and she'll get you taken care of."
Rhosyn was glad to have this taken care of. Now she could focus on everything
else.
