Genna

Genna

Galerith landed on the Gather square among the other dragons. There
were dragons coming and going whole the time, picking up the
guests and last candidates for the Hatching.

On the ground, Genna could barely contain herself. A Hatching, a real
Hatching, at the Weyr! And she was going there on a dragon! She still
couldn't believe her luck. Bouncing up and down on the balls of her
feet she looked at her uncle with a big grin. "Oh Uncle Chupsin, this
is so exciting! Look at all those dragons! Which one is our ride?"

"Ummm...you know I'm not really sure.." Tourniquet flew above them,
flying around his larger cousins. "The note said it would be a blue." His
eyes kept scanning before he noticed a dragon waiting. It was still sitting
there. "Maybe that one, Genna. Come on." Walking over, the healer in his
gather finery hailed the dragonrider. "Rider!" Chupsin called up, trying to
get Sh'lua's attention.

"Going to the Weyr?" Sh'lua asked, answering the call with a waive of his
hand.

"Yes, yes we are!" Genna replied eagerly, biting her lip to stop
herself from talking too much and leaving the introductions to her
uncle. It was just so unbelievably awesome and she couldn't keep her
eyes away from the blue dragon behind Sh'lua. He was gorgeous!

"Aye, my niece and I are going to attend the Hatching," Chupsin replied, a
bit
more sedately, though there was a note of amusement in his voice as he
watched
Genna. **I really should have gotten her out a bit sooner. Please let
her manners hold.**

When Galerith heard the sound of her voice, his blue head whipped
around and he studied her with intense interest.
}: We are taking her with us to the Sands,:{ it was statement, not a
question.

**Oh, no. Not now, not again!** Sh'lua groaned mentally. They should
never assign transport duty to Searchriders. Searching your passanger
was bad manners. It did happen now and then though.

"Umh, how old are you? First time going to the Weyr?" he asked the
girl. She seemed to be of suitable age and Galerith never Searched too
young or too old. But he was not sure how to approach the subject, so
he was taking a roundabout route.

"I've got sixteen turns on me, sir," Genna replied promptly, glancing
at her uncle to see if he approved of her behaviour. "And it is my
first time indeed, I'm so very grateful you agreed to take us there,
sir!"

**It's not like we need her, there's only 17 eggs and we have plenty
of Candidates,** Sh'lua continued his mental conversation with
Galerith.

}: Yes, we do need her. Just tell her, :{ the blue was insistent.

**Bossy blue! ***

"I hope you're prepared for longer stay," Sh'lua murmured with almost
embarrassed tone. "Because this big, blue bully says you should be
Standing."

Genna blinked, looking at the rider as if he was talking complete and
utter nonsense. "Uhm.. wha - what do you mean, sir?" she asked,
glancing at her uncle nervously all of a sudden. It wasn't like she
hadn't fantasized about this the moment she had heard she would be
attending a hatching. In her daydreams she had impressed a glimmering
gold from the stands, even though there wasn't a gold egg at
Dragonfall Weyr at all. But she was too realistic to have believed
even a small part of that daydream to become reality.

"Galerith is Search dragon and he just Searched you, miss," Sh'lua
replied. He could understand her confusion.
"I'm afraid her mother would have to give permission," Chupsin cut in
quickly. He didn't have the authority, nor would he dream of usurping
either Makarl's or Sinla's position on this. On the one hand, it could be
good to have a rider in the family and they wouldn't have to pay Genna's
dowry. On the other hand, it meant sending Genna to the Weyr of all places
and if she didn't Impress, she wouldn't be able to marry.

"Of course," Sh'lua said. "But we don't have much time or the Hatching
will be over before we get there," he warned them.

"She will not Stand this Hatching. We will go as guests and then ask her
parents upon our return. If they give permission, she may go back with the
rider then. Will that suffice?" Chupsin didn't know exactly how these things
worked, but it sounded appropriate to him.

Genna looked from her uncle, to the rider and back. Chupsin did make
sense, how in Faranth's name could she go and stand now? She was just
way too overwhelmed. Was this really happening? "Yes, I would like
that, if that's possible," she said softly, gesturing at Chupsin to
show she agreed with him.

"Fine with me," Sh'lua replied with a shrug. After all, if her dragon was
there, she would find her from the Stands too. As long as he get her to
Weyr, rest
was up to the dragons. "Shall we mount up then?" he suggested and hold out
his hand to help her up
on Galerith's back.

While Sh'lua helped Genna, Chupsin stood behind her, ready to catch her if
she missed a step. The healer was eager to get to the Weyr, though he
didn't
want to hurry Genna's experience of flying either. This new revelation-she
could be
Searched- was enough to think quietly about.

Genna felt a little whoop of excitement as she mounted the dragon, followed
shortly by the revelation that maybe, one day, she would be doing it on a
daily basis. Looking down at the dragon she felt her heart hammer. Could
she really be a dragonrider? But she shook that thought firmly from her
mind. Let's just go see the hatching first.
