D'hol

D'hol

D'naz was beaming. Not only had things gone well with the Weyrleader,
they'd gone doubly well. He'd gone in hoping the Weyrleader would
approve his transfer to Weyrlingmaster Third, and instead he'd been
promoted to Weyrlingmaster Second! Something D'naz didn't even have in
his sights at the moment, being a bluerider and all.

Whistling a happy tune, he set out to find D'hol and inform him of the news.

In his office, D'hol flicked over adjusted winglistings to accommodate the
incoming weyrlings. He'd paired them with experienced riders as K'deren
had suggested and hoped that the mentoring would take. His door
was open and as he say D'naz approach, he arched a brow and waved
him in.

"D'hol," D'naz greeted the bronzerider. "I'm glad your door was open.
I needed to talk with you. You recall the conversation we had
recently?" D'naz waited for the wingleader to acknowledge that before
continuing.

"Have a seat." D'hol leaned back in his chair and crossed one leg
over his knee. "Of course I do. Why do you ask?"

"I spoke to the Weyrleader today. I had hoped he would consider my
request to fill the Werylingmaster Third spot," D'naz began. "He did.
He actually asked me if I'd be willing to be the new Weyrlingmaster
Second!" D'naz's voice boomed even louder than normal at that
declaration. He was grinning like a young boy who'd caught his first
fish. "I couldn't say no to such an offer."

Brows rose and D'hol nodded. "Congradulations. I can't say that
you don't deserve it; you work hard. Though I must say that I'll
miss having another experienced rider in the wings. It's a hard
job, D'naz. " D'hol rubbed his chin. "Now that I think of it, perhaps
you could do me a favor."

He nodded, accepting the praise and the advice in one.

"Of course, D'hol. What do you have in mind?"

"There's a young weyrling that I've an interest in. Keep an eye
on young Jeyme, if you would. I'd like her to be good enough for my
wing." D'hol stated simply. "She seems to be quite determined to
prove herself. "

D'naz nodded, "Will do," he recalled seeing the girl Impress green at
the recent hatching. He was curious about D'hol's interest in her, but
knew better than to press for details. "I hope to keep a close eye on
them all, but I'll make sure to guide her as best as I can. My plan is
to train them all to be good enough for all the wings." He only hoped
he would be able to help them all.

"Of course it is." D'hol shrugged. "But this girl is very determined.
It's...interesting. And I like determination. She could be a good fit."

"Understood. I know what you like in a rider. I'll guide her and see
if she'll be right for your wing," D'naz replied. "We need all the
new, young riders we can get. It seems that more and more of us get
injured each Fall. It's hard to believe we've been at this nearly 6
Turns now and that we have _so_ many more Turns ahead of us. Some of
the riders are showing more fatigue recently than we saw in the past."

Nodding in agreement, D'hol finally gave a small smile. "Just do
your best."

"Will do," D'naz replied. "Any other suggestions or advice?"

D'hol nodded. "Yes. Remember, most of these Weyrlings are children.
They're going to act like children." His lip curled slightly. "You'll be
a parent, a mentor, and a disciplinarian all at once. Make no mistake, you'll
get close, but don't get too close. You can't be friends with them. It makes
it harder during their first fall if they don't make it. "

"Aye, that is good advice to keep, and truth be told, you made need to
remind me of it from time to time. It's _hard_ not to get close to the
young weyrlings when we spend so much time together. It will be harder
than ever to lose them straight away." D'naz was not looking forward
to that time, but he had lost friends, lovers and others in the past,
and had learned how to move on from some of those losses, though none
were ever easy.

"You're going to have to learn distance." D'hol sat up and frowned.
"It's hard when you lose a wingmate. You feel guilt, especially if you
are the one leading them. But you also have to allow yourself to know
that some things can't be helped. Some mistakes can't be taken back.
You accept it, you learn from it, and you move on." He met D'naz's
gaze plainly. "You have to become hard."

D'naz knew _exactly_ what the wingleader was speaking of. A part of
his very own life itself seemed to have been taken from him when he'd
lost his weyrmate N'ril so many Turns ago now. Part of him had become
hard then. Yet, he still felt the need to have a different outlook on
his life than D'hol suggested. Otherwise, D'naz feared, he, himself,
would have flown to /between/ to join N'ril so many Turns ago.

"Aye, I understand that D'hol, and I thank you for the advice. I've
never truly _led_ a wing or group before. So this will be a new
experience for me. Loss, aye. I've felt, and close to my heart at
that. I know it will be hard to lose those I train. If you don't mind,
I'd like to speak with you again as we near those times. Your
experience with such things may just be what I need to get through
those times."

"My office will always be open to you, D'naz. At any time. If you need
anything, come find me. Just because you're no longer in my wing,
doesn't mean I can't guide you or help you when it's needed."

"Thank you D'hol. I appreciate that more than you know." D'naz liked
the Wingleader. Had from the time he'd arrived. He had done good
things for the wing and D'naz knew he would continue to do good things
for the whole Weyr as well.
