"Well," the newly named C'baz said as he pulled his leg over the bench
and took a seat next to his friend. "Both at once. Now that's a
surprise! I figured at least one of us would be left standing."
"I've never even seen a hatching before," he laughed. "Actually I
didn't get to see much of this one either."
"Yeah, you left pretty quickly. And was that a bronze I saw you with?"
C'baz thought it might have been, but then again, browns could come in
similar shades sometimes.
"Yes," he smiled. "He's bronze and his name's Tonuth." His eyes
softened as his mind reached out for his sleeping lifemate. "What did
you Impress?"
"A blue." No surprise there! "Pawtinath. He's pretty," C'baz said
with a soft smile.
"I'll have to come see him," smiled L'cor.
"Oh, don't worry. I think we'll be seeing a lot of each other's dragons
in the next few months." After all, their whole lives would now revolve
around their lifemates. Which was not a bad thing. "Where you
surprised to get a bronze?"
"Oh I'm sure we will. I'll bet the first few weeks will be all about
cutting up herd beasts. The way he is eating..." he just shook his
head. "You know I didn't have any idea what to expect really. They're
all so wonderful. I'm just very lucky one of them picked me."
"Have you ever butchered a herdbeast?" C'baz asked with a laugh. "That
is one dirty, smelly job, let me tell you."
"No," he laughed. "I was an Under Steward. I've seen it, or at least
part of it. But I've never done it myself."
"An Under Steward, eh? That's a pretty good job in a Hold." C'baz
could see his friend in such a position, though. It suited him.
"Yes," he nodded. "It was a very good position. That's why it was suck
a hard decision to come here."
"It all turned out great in the end for you. I mean, what can be better
than Impressing a bronze?" Besides a blue, of course.
"It is great. I couldn't possibly have imagined what Impression was
like. I mean... how can you possibly describe it?"
"You know I did it too, right?" C'baz laughed, giving his should a
gently shove. "No explanation necessary."
"Yeah," he chuckled and shook his head. "I meant to someone else. The
greenrider who searched me tried her best to explain it and I thought
I understood. But I wasn't even close."
"Well, I guess it's like sex. People can tell you over and over what
it's like, but it's no substitute for doing it yourself."
Unfortunately, none of them would be doing _that_ for a while...
L'cor got a rather silly grin on his face. "Yeah well," he didn't
quite know what else to say without giving away all the greenrider had
taught him.
"Oh shards, you know what I just remembered?" C'baz said with a slight
frown. "I have to move all that merchandise from under my cot to the
Weyrling barracks." _That_ was going to be a chore! But there were was
to make the job easier. "I'll give you a carved horn pendant if you
help me."
"I'll help ya," he smiled. He didn't really need the pendant but if
the guy wanted to give it to him he wouldn't object. "After the feast
maybe? If our lifemates are asleep that is?"
"Yeah, whenever they decide to kick us out of our old barracks is fine,"
C'baz agreed. "Some of it can be wrapped up in a blanket and hauled
over all at once, but some of it takes a bit more care. And of course
you can look through it and if you see anything you want, just make me
an offer." He probably wouldn't have much time to concentrate on making
a profit any time soon anyway!
"Well, I don't have a lot of stuff so you can use some of my storage
space in the barracks if you need."
"No, no, no," C'baz said emphatically. "Don't say that, or I _will_ use
it all. Not a good idea." Just the thought of more space made him itch
to fill it, which was not what he should be thinking about now that he
had a dragon to take care of.
L'cor could almost see the wheels turning. "Couldn't we just ask the
headwoman if we can put your stuff in storage until we move into our
own weyrs? It's not like your're going to have much time to scratch
let alone pursue your business."
"I might have to," C'baz sighed, "though not tonight. And I don't know
when I'll have time to move everything _again_. Is that where most your
stuff is?"
"Yeah," nodded L'cor. "I knew we'd only have a small space until our
dragons grew large enough to need their own weyrs. Even then the space
won't be all that big." He chuckled. "Of course Tonuth is going to get
a _lot_ bigger."
"True, but that's why you'll be getting the _big_ Weyr!" C'baz would
envy his space. And his convenience! "You might even get one with a
bathing pool in it eventually!"
That startled him, "Really? They have those?"
"In the bigger Weyrs, yes. And especially if you hold a rank in the
Wing. It will probably be a few Turns before you get a personal bathing
pool, but who knows," C'baz said with a shrug. But he was sure L'cor
had more of a chance than he did as a bluerider!
L'cor laughed. "Well first we have to get through training," then
Tonuth woke up hungry again "and feeding."
