Weyrlingmaster Third and gets as surprise promotion to Second!

D'naz strode up to the Weyrleaders office. He was not a man afraid to
speak his mind or ask questions, though he _knew_ when to hold back
and when to press forward. Raising his hand, he knocked. It was a loud
knock, typical of D'naz. He hardly ever did anything quietly.
"Come in." When the door opened, N'vanik said, "Hey D'naz."
"N'vanik," the shorter, but slightly burly man greeted the Weyrleader.
"I hope you don't mind the intrusion, but I wanted to speak with you
about matters of the wings."
"Not at all. Have a seat."
"Thank you," D'naz said, taking the seat. Not one to beat around the
bush when he knew N'vanik would be busy, D'naz spoke, "I wanted to ask
about transferring wings. I heard that the Weyrlingmaster Third
position was available, and I've always had an inclination to work
with the young ones. As you know I've even done a few stints in the
Weyrling wing as an assistant, but moved back into the regular
fighting wings when Thread came as I knew I was more needed there. I
haven't been with the weyrling wing in quite some time, so I realize
you may already have someone in mind for the position, but," here
D'naz stopped and gave a shoulder shrug, "I wanted to ask as it's
something that's been in the back of my mind for some time now."
N'vanik leaned back, considering. They needed all their wingriders,
but they had managed with less than they had now. And the
weyrlingstaff needed leaders. Sh'del had just been saddled with
another group of junior weyrlings and he had no 'Third to help him out
... or even a 'Second for that matter. *Hmm* "Would you consider
taking the Weyrlingmaster Second position?"
"The Second?" D'naz replied rather loudly as he was surprised by the
idea. "I wouldn't have even dared to ask for such a position,
considering I haven't been working with the weyrlings recently." Then
gathering up his shock, he looked N'vanik right in the eye. "I could
_definitely_ handle the position, N'vanik, and would be more than
willing to fill those shoes. I can assure you, I would not let you,
Sh'del, the weyrlings or the Weyr down if I were given such a worthy
job." D'naz was still shocked that he was even being offered the
position of Weyrlingmaster Second. He hadn't even been certain he
would be given a chance to fill the Third position.
"I know it's a bit of a risk, but your record is good. And honestly,
it's hard to find weyrlingstaff. The Pass has ... well, a lot of them
can't handle watching their weyrlings get maimed and killed during the
Blooding." It was hard enough to watch adult riders taken by Thread.
"Do you think you can handle that?"
D'naz thought on that a moment and then replied, "I can tell you
honestly, it won't be easy to see such things, but I've seen worse and
lived through some rough spots of my own. I'll sure do all I can to
teach the young ones what they need to know so we can avoid as many of
those situations as possible. If it ever gets to be too much for me,
I'll come and talk to you. Fair?" He didn't know what else to say.
"Yeah." N'vanik understood that no one really knew what they could
handle until they faced it. He opened a drawer and pulled the knots
out. "Congratulations, Weyrlingmaster Second." He slid the knots
across the desk. In a quieter tone, he added, "Take good care of my
weyrlings."
D'naz reached for the knots and stood. "I am truly honored, sir. I
will care for each and every one of them as if they were my own flesh
and blood. Now, _that_ is a promise I _can_ keep."
