Standing there with his glass in hand, he kept an eye on his niece, who was
currently putting food on her plate.
Chupsin had to admit, it was nice to get away from Amber Hills for a bit,
to forget what had happened, and to be
around folk who were celebrating life. Of course it hadn't been the best
Hatching ever, but it was still a Hatching.
Seeing a man's knots as the fellow walked by, he swallowed his wine quickly
and went walking. "Excuse me, Master?"
He thought it couldn't hurt to say hello, after all.

"Yes?" Taren turned to look the person who was addressing him. He didn't
know the younger man but could read his knots, hold's healer.

"I'm Chupsin, Senior Journeyman at Amber Hills. I heard you took over from
Telemon. Well met, sir." He offered his
hand, his eyes tracking Taren, making all sorts of observations as he
mentally examined the other man upon this
first meeting.

"Well met Chupsin. I'm Taren, master surgeon but you already seem to know
that," Taren replied and shook the hand.
His grip was firm but gentle. No finger-crushing contest from him.

"And what brought you to the Weyr?" It was curiosity more than anything
else, but he wondered why the man had chosen
a Weyr over other postings, though it would certainly provide more of an
opportunity for surgery, no doubt.

"Which Weyr? I was born in a Weyr...well, weyrhold," Taren replied. He
hated vague questions like that.

"This one. Why did you choose Dragonsfall?" The man was Weyrborn, that was
interesting. That meant he was more familiar with the type of injuries he
would see here, which could also be a reason why he had applied for the job.

"There was lot of reason and all of them personal. Now, why would I tell
them to you?" Taren answered and asked.

"Because a man's reasons why tell a lot about a man and by the nature of
our being close we may work with each other. Of course you are the Master
and may do what you wish, but I did not see the harm in asking." Careful,
now. Chupsin had not figured this man for being prickly, but perhaps he had
a past as well.

"Well, all you really need to know about me, is that if you need my special
skills, just send me a word and I come as
soon as I can get a dragonrider. And I like red heads," Taren replied with
a shrug and give the younger man a grin. "I can't see us doing that much
working together. I presume you have enough healers in the hold to handle
all the normal
cases. If not, you have an incompetent Lord Holder."

Chupsin didn't imagine it would happen often, but there was a possibility
from time to time. "Normal cases aye, but we
don't have a Master yet and you happen to be the closest if one were
needed." By the tone of his voice, Chupsin made it
clear that it was only a matter of time before he received his knots, but
in the back of his mind he remembered Zathris
going over his head and bringing Miranek in for the birthing.

"And I'll come when called..." whatever Taren planned to say next was
drowned by "Daddy! Daddy!" cries.

A little girl of five ran to him, wrapping her arms around his legs. She
had dark red hair and her father's warm brown eyes.

"Dance with me, daddy," she asked.

"In a bit, sweetheart," Taren promised and picked her up.

"This is my daughter Tarine," he said to Chupsin.

That sight was enough to unman the usually smug healer. He began to think
of what might have been. Had the baby sleeping
in Alivya's belly been a girl? Maybe she might have said that same thing to
him one day? His face turned an interesting shade
before he smiled. "Well it's been a pleasure to meet you sir. I've got to
go and find my niece before she gets taken off by some rider."

"Likewise, Chupsin," Taren nodded.
