Genna

Genna pushed the door to the infirmary open with her foot as she
balanced a tray of food in her hands. Her mother still sent her off to
Chupsin with a meal on occasion, knowing full well how keen he was on
burying himself in his work. She was fond of her uncle and didn't mind
a trip to the infirmary in the least. At least things happened there.
"Uncle Chupsin?" she called out as she looked around for the Healer.

At that precise moment, he was knee deep in blood. One of those random
farm accidents and someone had lost an appendage. Working quickly, he
had to amputate, sew up, and cauterize. He still didn't know if the
man would make it with the blood loss, but he'd tried. Standing there,
he looked around before heading towards the latrine. Time for a
shower.

One of his apprentices saw Genna though and told her what had happened.

"Oh tell him to take his time," Genna smiled pleasantly as she sat
down in an empty chair. "I'll wait for him right here." What an excuse
to hang out in the Infirmary for a while! As she waited, Genna struck
up a conversation with a few patients, delighting in how easy it was
to make them all smile a little. The injured and sick could be so
adoring of anyone who spent a little time with them and she loved the
attention.

After a bit, Chupsin reappeared and tracked down his niece. "So what's
on the menu this evening?" He was thankful for the food since after
having Alivya cook for him, he had sort of gotten used to it. It was
hard to go back to his useless cooking. Besides, he didn't have time
to cook anyhow.

"Mashed tubers and roast wherry," Genna smiled as she held up the tray
invitingly. She was in a good mood and it showed in her sparkling blue
eyes. "Where you do want to sit, uncle? And how's your poor patient?"

"Smells lovely...ahh..come on back to my cot." He avoided talk of the
patient until they were back in his small set of rooms-another sign he
was trying to erase all signs of his brief marriage. Sitting down when
he reached the chair at the table, he sighed. "Don't know yet. If he
makes it through the night and doesn't get infection, there's a good
chance, though."

"Good," Genna said seriously as she began to unload the tray onto the
table. "I'm sure you did everything you could." It had something
magical to her, her uncle's ability to save lives.

"So what's going on with you?" he asked as he reached for the drink
and started to pour. He'd already washed his hands so he didn't bother
with that.

"Oh uncle," Genna replied with a sigh and a roll of her eyes. "Like
there is ever anything going on with me. The same old, same old as
always." Her words echoed with the frustration and hopelessness of an
utterly bored teen.

"Hmm...not met a good, smart suitor? I thought your mother had spoken
to some of the other families? I offered to ask if there were any
young men at the Hall that looked promising. When they gain their
journeyman knots, they can come here to study under me." He wanted to
be helpful, he really did.

"Suitors, Faranth yes, there are always suitors!" Genna nearly
exploded and for a moment she closed her eyes to collect herself.
After taking a deep breath she opened them again and looked at her
uncle with her usual polite, ladylike smile again. "One day mother
might smother me with suitors and I think I wouldn't mind. I feel
suffocated enough as it is."

"Do you not want to be married then?" His tone was unsure, not really
wanting her to say yes to that question since he didn't see a future
for her otherwise. At least not a promising one though he would do
what he could. **Please Faranth don't tell me she doesn't like men**

"Of course I do!" Genna replied with a laugh at her uncle's careful
question. "But I want to marry someone exciting, someone who will take
me places, not some stuffy holder or hidebound crafter like those
mother is gathering for me." Genna grimaced at Chupsin. "I'm sixteen
turns and I've never seen anything other than this Hold, uncle. Can't
you see how frustrating that is?"

"Well the first is probably a matter of you telling your mother that.
The second, perhaps I can fix." Chupsin decided to shoot some age-won
wisdom towards his niece, though. "Be careful, though, Genna.
Sometimes what your idea of exciting might be is not really what you
want when you have it. I could have done with... a lot less
excitement." He wasn't talking about his travelling days, though, of
course. But rather the value of a nice, predictable, quiet home life.

"Oh I tried," Genna said, her face contorting a little in an imitation
of her mother. "Exciting doesn't bring food to the table." Her uncle's
next words did pick her up a little, though, and she hardly heard his
warning words. "How?"

"Aye well it's been awhile since I went visiting old friends. Perhaps
I can arrange to and you could come along. Tell your mother there
might be some good lads about you could speak to under my watchful eye
of course." And he meant that. She would not end up like Alivya and
dead on someone's floor.

Genna practically squealed at that and threw her arms around her
uncle's neck. "You would do that for me? Thank you so much! Thank you
so much!" Just the idea of being out from under her mother's
all-seeing eyes for just a few days had her giddy with joy. "You're
the best, uncle."

"Don't tell everyone. They might start coming in thinking I'm handing out
free fellis to everybody." He grinned for a moment before he started to slowly
eat his supper. "So yeah, tell your mother. If she has questions, she can come
ask."

"I won't, I won't," Genna said, a grin from ear to ear. "Where would
we go?" Oh this was just to good to be true, she couldn't wait to tell
all her friends, they would be so jealous! Well, some of them at
least.

"Don't know yet. Maybe to the Hall, maybe to another Hold...depends on
who I can go to visit." And when he could get time off from Lord Zathris to
do that.

"Oh, it's going to be awesome for sure," Genna beamed, her face alight
with joy she had not felt since her mother had shown her her new Gather
dress last summer. Her mind was already full with all the adventure
she would be having there.
