Description: The two Weyrwomen meet at the hatching
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 12, day 7 of Turn 6
"Congratulations on another excellent Hatching," Hygalia smiled, giving
her Dolphin Cove counter-part a polite bow.
"Thank you very much," she said and reflected the short bow. "I'm
sorry I missed your last hatching," she said. She'd sent a message by
her little brown flit Shadow to let the other Weyrwoman know she'd
been ill.
"That's all right," Hygalia said with an understanding wave. "We can't
attend _every_ Hatching on Pern nowadays," she said with a bit lower
voice. "It's not like the old days when a Hatching was a rare event."
She nodded in agreement. "Those days seem so slow to me now even
though I know they were full of planning and anticipation. And the
clutches are so large."
"Well, luckily, just about the time we start considering retiring, the
Pass will end and we will once again enjoy those slow days." One thing
about being a gold rider, they could pretty much bet they would survive
the Pass. But that also meant they would live to say goodbye to too
many good people.
Cyradis sometimes found it difficult to think that far into the
future, though she was fairly certain she'd end up retiring before
this pass was through. But while humans stopped reproducing far sooner
than their dragons did, she was assured of a long tenure as Senior
Weyrwoman at Dolphin Cove. "I don't know if I look forward to that or
not," she chuckled.
"Oh, I do." There was no hesitation there for Hygalia. "Remember when
we used to be able to get away for a while? When was the last time you
spent a whole day not thinking about the Weyr and it's problems?" Of
course, it wasn't that she couldn't handle it, just that she missed the
luxury of it. "Didn't you ever just take a trip for a couple days just
to relax?"
Cyradis shook her head. "I can't remember the last time." Her lips
twister into a smile as she thought about actually getting away for a
few days with K'deren. "It would certainly be nice."
"You should come here to the beach sometime."
"When I have a free afternoon, I certainly will. Perhaps you might even
spare a few Candidates to give my Genith a wash? She'd like that." And
perhaps both Weyrwomen could catch up in the meantime.
"Of course," she grinned, "But then she just might like to play with
the dolphins. We have the Hall just down the coast a little and
they're very familiar with Panitath. We could have a nice picnic on
the beach. I know a nice shady cove that would be just perfect."
"It does sound nice," Hygalia smiled, thinking of the warm sand, the
sound of the ocean, the smell in the air. And the blissful peace.
"We'll have to carve a space out of our schedules. After Turns End, of
course." Things would be crazy up until then.
"Alright," smiled Cyradis. "After turns end I'll send my little brown
flit Shadow with a note and we can arrange it." It would be good to
spend some time with the other Weyrwoman. There were pressures on both
of them that they couldn't really discuss, even with their
Weyrleaders. "I look forward to it."
"And I will have to return the favor some day. We may not have
beautiful beaches, but the snow caped mountains can take your breath
away." Hygalia had truly fallen in love with her Weyr, despite the
biting cold the snow could bring. There was beauty even in that.
Cyradis smiled at that. She'd come from the North and the Weyr there
had been in the mountains as well. It had been a bit of an adjustment
when she'd first come to Dolphin Cove. Thus her interest in getting
the Weyr updated to provide power to all the rooms eventually. "That
I'd love to see," she smiled. "I miss the mountains."
"Well, then, you take me down to the beach, and I'll take you out into
the mountains. There are some very beautiful mountain meadows that will
be just gorgeous when the leaves start turning." That was something
they didn't get to see in Dolphin Cove for sure!
"It's a plan," Cyradis nodded. She felt Hygalia's suggestion could
work out very well indeed.
