Karhal

Karhal

It was time they had a meeting. Chupsin was determined to nip this trend of
Karhal's in the bud. The guard captain was put himself into an early grave and he was pretty
sure they didn't have a backup. Besides, it was his duty to foster the good health of all the holders at Amber Hills and Karhal was included in that. Remembering their last awkward conversation, he took a breath and put on his healer façade. Clinical and disinterested, he waited for the captain to show up. He'd sent Tourniquet with a message sometime earlier in the day. **What a useful pet you are** he thought towards the firelizard who offered his head for a rub.

Karhal had not been pleased to be pulled from inspecting the kennels to have this meeting with Chupsin. Livie had been bred, though it was not to be known for a few more sevendays if the breeding had been successful. He was far too busy to speak to the Healer, but grudgingly made
his way to the Hold's infirmary. He strode in, composed but inwardly impatient. His sharp gaze found Chupsin and he wasted no time in approaching. "You wanted to see me?"

"Aye I did." After letting Karhal know he wanted to speak with him, Chupsin led him into his office and sat down, gesturing to the empty chair in front of the desk. "Please, have a seat,
Karhal."

Arching a brow, Karhal sat, crossing one leg over the other. "Can we make this quick? I'm needing to finish an inspection."

Karhal had picked the time to come so why had he come when he was busy? Chupsin thought it was probably to cut the meeting short and escape. Interesting avoidance tactics. "It depends on
you, though I will try." The healer opened up hides and notes on his desk. "Karhal, as the Hold's healer, it's my duty to keep its residents healthy. And I take my duty seriously. To that end, I'd like to ask you a few questions." Of course he already knew the answers. "How are you sleeping and eating?" His speech was relaxed and controlled, without any emphasis. Chupsin's eyes showed no emotion, just clinical interest.

One pale brow rose as Chupsin began to speak, then lowered, Karhal's gaze growing cool and his posture stiff, as though offended that the Healer was attempting to delve into his personal matters. Voice clipped, Karhal answered. "As well as can be expected."

"Can you quantify that, Captain? So I may record it?" It was clear that he was indeed making notes and the healer was also not going to give up without getting a straight answer.

"No." Karhal exhaled slowly and though he seemed calm, irritation was beginning to climb to the
surface. "What are you really after, Chupsin?"

"I'm wondering if your answers are going to confirm my suspicions which is why I am asking these questions. You see, Karhal, it is apparent from what I do know that you are not taking care of yourself like you should which will lead to further health problems." Of course it went without saying that the Guard Captain needed to be healthy and able to commit to his
duties.

"My health is perfectly fine." His words were curt. It was true that he was
often tired, and skipped a meal here and there...perhaps more often than
not and his pants were a bit looser, but it didn't trouble him overly much.
Blue eyes twitched and his fingers drummed against the arm of his chair.

"Perhaps now it isn't so bad but if your weight loss and lack of sleep
continue-they could interfere with your ability to perform your duties and
harm your health. If you don't eat enough to nourish properly, it can
effect your muscle mass, your body's organs, and plenty of other things."
Chupsin leaned back in his seat and put down his ink quill. "Karhal, you
need to sleep and eat. If you're having problems sleeping I can give you a
draught to help with it, but if you don't rest, you could even miss details
you wouldn't normally miss besides the rest."

It seemed awfully funny. The healer was intervening with the guard on an
issue he himself was experiencing, though he had made an effort to slightly
improve his eating habits recently.

It took effort for Karhal not to grit his teeth. The lecture was not well
received, especially since Chupsin was right. But, he reasoned to himself,
he was still exercising so was not overly concerned about his muscle mass.
If anything, he was more defined than usual. His lips visibly thinned. "I
don't need a sleeping draught." He spoke slowly. "But I will think about
what you've said."

"Very well." Of course it went without saying that if Chupsin noticed a
further decline, he would have to report it to Zathris. And the healer was
also going to enlist Zelanka in his efforts. She'd make sure Karhal got fed
whether he liked it or not. "If you change your mind, you know where I am
if you have any questions or need anything." Recognizing his point had been
made and knowing the other man wasn't stupid, the healer didn't go any
further.

He wasn't likely to change his mind, nor did he want to further discuss
Chupsin's concerns. Karhal's jaw twitched and he rose from his seat. "Of
course." Not asking if the Healer was finished, he inclined his head
brusquely in farewell and then turned on his heel to stride out and back to
what he had been doing previously. Sleeping draught his right rear arse
cheek....
