Z'ku

Z'ku

He watched and waited, and finally saw his chance. Meledei was alone.
Z'ku stepped up to her and bowed. "May I have this dance?"

"Of course." Meledei agreed readily. She accepted his hand and
allowed him to lead her onto the dance floor. R'ehn's lessons had
paid off and she moved more easily and gracefully than she used to,
even better since Elleth's own first hatching. Practise certainly
helped. "I was going to ask you if you didn't ask me soon."

A smile spread across his face and lit his eyes. "Sorry to keep you
waiting, then." He moved to the pleasant tune featuring a lilting
flute.

Meledei slipped into Z'ku's embrace and flowed easily with his
movements. "I haven't seen much of you lately. How have you been?"

"Good. How are things with you? Getting along with the new Weyrwoman?"

"Thus far." To be honest, Meledei had been a little conservative.
Traelyn had hurt her, but Janani's betrayal had been worse. Thus far,
her confidence was growing in Cyradis, but she still wasn't ready to
completely trust her. "She's definitely competent."

Z'ku nodded. "The Weyr is running smoothly. I'm glad you're getting
along. I know you've had a difficult time with the changes."

"Not as difficult as some." Meledei had been able to handle herself
all right despite the abandonment on part of the goldriders who were
supposed to have mentored her. Cyradis was now doing the job - and
the more time passed, the more Meledei relaxed. She liked the
Weyrwoman, but she had to admit there was still worry that nagged at
the back of her mind. "The Weyr still goes on and all that."

He gave her a quick spin. "So what else have you been up to?"

"Not much, really. Just same old same old." Meledei exited the spin
before her skirts did, the fabric twisting briefly around her body
before settling down. "My life is so boring."

"We'll have to do something about that, then." His eyes twinkled.

"What do you have in mind?"

His heart thumped. He wanted to do something special for her, but if
it was _too_ special, she might pull away from him again. "You were a
beastcrafter, so you know how to ride runners, right?"

"Of course. No beastcrafter worth her salt would not know." Meledei
grinned and then laughed. "You want to go riding?"

"Yes. Are you free next restday?" It would be a chance for them to
spend time alone together.

"I don't currently have any plans." She'd just had an adventure with
T'nom and the hatching had cut it short, but Meledei didn't mind.
Hatching feasts were definitely a grand cause for celebration. "Do
you have something in mind?"

Z'ku smiled. "A nice long ride, and a stop for lunch at some point. No
destination." Since leaving home, he'd learned that it was sometimes
nice not to have a plan.

"Sounds nice." It was just like the trip she and T'nom had just been
on before the call for the Hatching had come. "I'd like that."

His smile spread wider. He gave her one last spin as the song ended.
"I very much look forward to it."
