Zathris

Zathris

Zathris knocked
on the door of the healer. It had been a few sevendays and
he hadn't any
reason to go to the infirmary so hadn't seen Chupsin
around. The man had
been on his mind though, so when his work was done
that evening, the Lord
Holder took a detour to stop by Chupsin's quarters.

Back in his old digs
near the Infirmary, the widower answered the door, surprised
to see
Zathris there. Tourniquet gave a small chirrup as the bronze saw their
guest
from where he sat on the healer's shoulder. "M'lord, to what do I owe
the pleasure?"
Without thinking, he moved aside to let the other man
pass.

Zathris stepped inside with the silent invitation and glanced
around. The death
of his wife had come so soon after their marriage that
the quarters hadn't been
reassigned, so Chupsin had been able to get it
back. "I just came to see how you
were doing."

**To make sure I
haven't cracked up no doubt.** "Well I've started working again
so that
gives me something to do." Not really knowing what to say and feeling a
bit
uncomfortable speaking about something so personal with the Lord Holder,
Chupsin
tried to tiptoe around the subject.

Zathris nodded.
"Having something to do is important." It had been therapeutic for
him.
He'd probably have gone crazy after his first wife died if he hadn't. "Are
you
settling back in all right?"

"Ahhh..yeah. My sister...well she
made sure I had what I needed." It followed that
as usual, baby brother
would get what he needed especially when something like
that had
happened. It also helped that Sinla could spend time away from her
husband
when doing for Chupsin.

"Good." Having family helped,
especially family that was sympathetic. Zathris' father
hadn't been at
all, though some of his siblings had been. "Is there anything _else_
you
need? Maybe some time off?" Chupsin had gotten some time to be with
his wife, it was sad to think that his next would be because of her
death.

"I umm...well I had some while I was waiting for the guards to
investigate the matter.
So I'm fine." No embarrassment bled through,
though it was highly awkward that he had
to admit to having been
investigated for killing his own wife. He knew Zathris would have
gotten
those reports, though, so he didn't mention it further.

"If you need more
time, I will not deny you." Healing didn't go according to plan. It
didn't
follow any sort of straight path and some people needed more time than
others.

"Sir, I appreciate your deference in this matter. However, I
am being completely honest
when I say I need to work. I need to immerse
myself into solving the problems of others
and helping them to heal.
Maybe...it'll help me heal as well." He couldn't focus on his
own
stuff-not yet.

And Zathris could understand that too. Sometimes
taking time didn't help. Sometimes you
just had to keep busy - just so
you could keep from going crazy or wallowing in your despair.
Yeah, he
knew that all too well. "All right then. But if you need anything, I don't
want you to
hesitate to ask, got it?"

"Aye," Chupsin agreed easily,
wondering if Zathris would go or if he
needed to find something to offer the
man. It was an awkward moment as
he moved to dig into the small sideboard
for a skin or something. There
was the leavings of what Daimhin had
brought.

"Don't bother, I don't want to inconvenience you. I just wanted
to see
how you were doing." Zathris wondered if he should offer to stay
or go....he thought it might
be best to go, but he would definitely check in
with the healer again,
and soon. "I should probably get back. But I mean
what I said."

"Thanks, m'lord. I'll keep it in mind." He had just taken a
vacation
when he and Alivya had gone on their trip. That seemed like so long
ago.
