Description: The family tries to eat dinner.
Location: Elsewhere on Pern
Date: month 11, day 2 of Turn 6
Making dinner had taken up half the evening. She hadn't gotten any of
the things she wanted done. Her husband was nowhere to be found and
the children needed help with their harperwork. Daizimi wondered where
Vorbojes was. He certainly wasn?t with her, fixing the chair that had
broken, causing her to fall which had left a bruise. **If he doesn't
get home soon...**
"Daizi?" Vorbojes called out as he entered their small cothold. "I'm
home." It had been a long, tiring day and all he wanted to do now was
have dinner with his family and go to bed. All he really wanted was to
sleep for days.
"There you are!" she said with an accusatory tone. "I don't know what
you were off doing that was so important. Dinner's ready even if I had
to almost break a leg to do it. I told you to fix that chair!" Her
eyes narrowed as her voice became louder. She sucked in wind,
seemingly to get ready.
"Oh, I'm sorry, love," Vorbojes said in a distracted tone of voice. "I'll
try and fix that tomorrow, alright? What's for dinner?" He really didn't
notice how worked up his wife was, he was just so tired and in all honesty
he just didn't *want* to see any troubles right now.
"Herdbeast stew, fresh bread, and flavored pudding for dessert," she answered
though her displeasure was still in her voice. **Tomorrow, he always puts
things off and never does them** "Clean up before you come to the table." He
stank, to be honest and she was afraid she wouldn't be able to eat while smelling it.
"Oh, you're great, love, thanks," Vorbojes smiled weakly and moved in
to give his wife a kiss.
She accepted it on her cheek, but she didn't remove the frown from
her face. setting out the plates and the glasses, Daizimi then prepared
to get the food onto the table. She was tired and hoped that the
children wouldn't be too energetic this evening. She didn't think she
could take it.
Vorbojes washed up quickly, being somewhat immune to his own smell
after all his long hours. He could feel his muscles protesting all
over his body and heaved himself into a chair. "It has been quite
a day," he sighed heavily.
After getting dinner on the table, she sat down too. Checking to see
that everyone had washed their hands, she started to eat. **One of
these days I am going to break my neck and then that man will see the
children starve to death.**
Vorbojes dug into his food hungrily. "So what did you do today, Obi?"
he asked with a soft smile as he looked at his oldest child.
The boy sighed before answering, "Not much really. We learned about
more things to do with numbers in lessons. I don't really like numbers.
I like when we get to play outside. Jaxyl found a bird's nest today.
There were eggs in it and everything! Everyone wanted to smash 'em but
I said no and kept them safe." Obimi's voice became more hurried and
excited as he told the story.
Bomi was fidgety and couldn't help the constant movements as Obimi
described his day. "I wanna see 'em," she said as she lurched forward
in her chair, her hand sending her glass of milk flying across the table.
Wincing as she heard the glass bump against the table as milk spattered
everywhere, Daizimi closed her eyes for a few moments. "Bomi, go get a
towel please." **Why? I can't even have a meal in peace?**
"Well done, Obi, saving those eggs. And don't worry about those
numbers too much, you got that from your dad and he turned out
alright without all that stuff." He gave his son an encouraging nod. When
Bomi knocked over the glass he gave her a stern look. "Now, honey, you
have to be more careful."
"Yeah, Bomi, don't be wasteful. Maybe after dinner we can go and find our
own eggs outside. Can we, Mommy?" His soft brown eyes looked to his mother
at the end of the table. She didn't look too happy and that discouraged him.
She'd probably say they had chores or something else to do after dinner.
In her mind, it was a way to get them from underfoot when she had to clean
up. They could come in afterwards and dry the dishes still. Besides, Daizimi
was tired and she didn't want to hear their yammering. "Sure, if you're careful."
"Now, Daizimi, I was hoping we could all read a story together after
dinner, what about that, kids?" Vorbojes cut in, not too pleased with
the thought of his little girl walking around Faranth knows where,
looking for eggs, with just her brother to look after her.
Waving her hand, Daizimi got up from the table to leave the rest of them
to work it out. She needed to get a warm bath before she even thought about
dishes and dealing with the rest of it. Her head hurt.
