Asking Permission

Description: Chupsin asks Alivya's father for her hand in marriage.
Location: Amber Hills Hold
Date: month 8, day 11 of Turn 6
Notes: Mentioned: Alivya

He had been thinking about the timing of things. Alivya would be showing...and then there'd be a baby. They'd kept things quiet long enough and he thought it was time to announce his intentions and get things squared away so it didn't look like he was trying to have a quick wedding. It wasn't unusual for holders to have short engagements since there was no real point. They didn't have elaborate ceremonies and things like that to prepare for.

Still, this would allow her parents time to get her a dress to wear, to adjust to the idea, and he could make the necessary preparations he needed to make. That in mind, Chupsin went to see the farmer. When he reached the cothold, he knocked on the door, hoping the man was home.

The door creaked open and a little girl of about 4 turns looked up at the healer. She had long dark hair and expressive eyes which peeked at him around the thumb in her mouth. "Yeth?" she asked past her thumb.

Idly, he wondered if his own child would look anything like that. "I need to speak to your father please."

The little girl nodded and stepped back inside. Silently she pointed to her right and moved back further to let him in.

Entering, he stepped aside and looked around. It looked like a well kept cot, which spoke to the training that Alivya would have as a wife. **Good.**
Waiting there, he thought again about what he was going to say.

Livren appeared from a room to the right and smiled by way of greeting. "Ahhh, I thought I heard the door. I see you've met Renati. She doesn't talk much." He stepped forward and tousled her hair. "I suppose being one of nine surviving children it's hard to find the time to speak." To his daughter he said, "Run along and help your mother now, there's a good girl."

Renati nodded and skipped away in the direction he'd just come.

"What can I do for you, healer?"

"I wanted to speak with you if you have the time-about Alivya." Chupsin's tone would let the man know it was a serious matter, though not one of grave health or anything else of that nature.

Livren's eyebrows rose. "I have the time. Is there a problem?" his voice was gruff with concern. The girl was a dreamer but surely she hadn't done something to offend the healer?

"Not a problem. I've come to announce my intentions to marry her, if you would approve." Certainly at almost thirty turns, it was time for him to marry, if there hadn't been other factors involved to speed up the necessity. "She seems like she would be a competent wife and it is time I think about such things."

The farmer blinked. Then blinked again. He was momentarily taken aback but used those blinks to compose himself and his thoughts. The healer seemed a dour chap at best but he had the right of it. He was getting on in turns and Alivya _would_ make a competent wife. Her happiness didn't so much as cross his mind. She'd do as she was told and be happy he'd made a suitable arrangement for her. Indeed she was getting on in turns as well.

"Aye," he said finally. "You have my approval. Truthfully it won't hurt to have a healer in the family."

"I will tell you now, though, that when it's the proper time I plan to return to the Hall to achieve mastery. So she may not always be here." That was a concern for some, but Chupsin didn't think the farmer would mind. An ambitious son-in-law would be better than a daughter who never left home.

Livren nodded. "That'll be your business. Besides, I have four more daughters to keep me occupied. She can read and write so I'd expect a letter once in a while." He would miss her but that wasn't going to stop him from turning down a perfectly good offer. "When are you thinking of having the ceremony?"

"I was thinking perhaps the end of the month. That would give the ladies and myself time to make the necessary preparations. I don't see a reason to lengthen the betrothal since neither of us have prior obligations." Clearly, he had thought about this and he knew Livren would not be expecting some huge ceremony. Such a thing was wasteful.

"Agreed. No doubt they'll want to make alterations to my wife's dress and whatever it is women do," Livren rolled his eyes. No sense in buying a new one when there was a perfectly good one in a chest somewhere. It might be a touch big for Alivya though, since unbeknownst to any but the healer who had been at the hold at the time, his wife had been pregnant when they'd married. He'd been lucky his wife had turned out all right really!

"I'm glad of your support, sir. I'll be in contact once I see the harper to let you know of when." He saw no need to draw this out and was glad it had gone so easily. Then again, for Alivya he really was quite a catch.

"And I'll inform the ladies." That was going to be interesting. Hopefully his wife wouldn't cry. Then again why would she? The healer seemed a competent, organized sort. He wondered if Alivya would prove to be as fertile as her mother. Well time would tell.
