"Chop and grind the rest of the herbs for the jars till they are full.
Then you may go for the rest of the day," he told the apprentices who
looked back at him. When he saw their nods, he left, greeting the nurse
who would watch over his ward during the night. She would wake him if
anything needed to be taken care of. Walking through the halls, he
headed to the Great Hall for supper, taking his usual place at the
trestle tables.
Once he had eaten his fill, he sat down by the soup hearth as others
filed out of the Hall. Relaxing by the fire, though the room was warm
enough, he didn't notice when someone stopped.
"Chupsin." The Lord Holder greeted the healer with a smile and then
motioned toward a spot next to him on the hearth. "May I?" He hadn't
seen the man since the birth of his boys. He didn't really need
permission to sit, he realized. He was the Lord Holder after all, but
Zathris was always the sort to be polite - even if he did hold rank on
others. That didn't necessarily make him _better_.
The healer looked up and saw Zathris. He was glad the Lord's children
were fine, though he was still a bit annoyed about the circumstances.
As it was, the Holder had an heir and Benani was fine. At the end of the
day, that was what mattered. "Aye," he gestured with politeness.
"Thank you." Zathris lowered himself down in a seat and then turned
eyes gaze to the Hall. There were very few left. Benani was resting
with the babies and he would join her shortly. "Long day?"
"Indeed, with the distinct possibility to be woken during the night if
something goes wrong." He was used to it, though, so his body could
take the demands.
"Much like what happened with Benani?" Zathris chuckled. He had
certainly woken up fairly quickly when it had finally dawned on him
what was happening.
"Indeed, though it's not always the women and babies. Fevers....but
anyway, you get used to it." He shrugged, using this rare opportunity
to observe Zathris up close.
"It's a difficult job, and I know it's something I couldn't do." Zathris
shook his head. "By the way, I never thanked you for helping with
Benani. I am grateful I had two very competent healers there."
If the observer knew Chupsin well, they would take the pause as proof
of his displeasure. To the average person, however, it would be no
different than his usual slightly smug demeanor. "I will do my duty to
my Hold and my Lady. And now she has done hers." It hadn't escaped him
that if the twins suffered any further health problems, it would be
_his_ responsibility to keep them alive and not Miranek's.
There was a pause from the Lord Holder. He wasn't especially close to
the healer, but he wasn't a complete stranger - and Zathris sometimes,
sometimes, was able to catch things. He eyed Chupsin with curiosity.
"Of course you will," he stated, studying the healer.
"Have you had your annual physical, m'lord?" He couldn't remember off
the top of his head when he'd seen Zathris and decided it was probably
as good a time as any. "Very important to keep on top of things before
they develop. Also, easier for me to fix things before they get worse
most of the time."
Zathris thought about that question then shook his head. "No, it's
been a while. I should come see you soon." The healer was right,
though honestly Zathris didn't feel like there was anything wrong.
Still, it was better to be safe than sorry.
"I'll be sure to make time," Chupsin replied evenly. He was also sure
that as much as Zathris had worried about the children before they had
been born, he was even more likely to worry now. So the Lord Holder
could very well be in the process of losing a lot of sleep.
"I'll be sure to schedule it during a time that won't make you work
longer than you already do." Zathris chuckled softly.
"Eh in my line of work schedules don't mean much, but it is what it is.
I would appreciate it, though." He looked down, thinking about how tired
he was. "As it is, I'm afraid I have to beg your leave. If I don't get
to bed soon, I might fall asleep right here."
"Forgive me if I find the idea of that amusing." Zathris chuckled
softly and nodded. He stood and held his hand out to the man if he
wanted assistance. "You get some rest."
Once he got to his feet, he was a bit unsteady but otherwise fine.
Chupsin yawned and then nodded before ambling off in the direction of
his bedfurs.
