It was his responsibility to inform Yanley that the plans had been changed. He hated to be in this position, but it was Zathris' fault to his way of thinking. As it was, he would afford the Lady the courtesy of letting her know if no one else was. She would still be helpful before Master Miranek arrived.
Yanley sent Bram away with a message attached to him. Thia made an envious chirrup. "Hush, girl, your turn will come," she murmured to her. "Ah, Chupsin," she noticed the healer.
"Good day Lady. And how are you this day?" he gave the customary greeting, already regretting what he was going to do.
"I'm fine, thank you. And how about you, journeyman?" Yanley used the title with respect.
"The day is good. I was hoping to speak with you," he informed her, looking around to see if anyone was within earshot.
"Go ahead," Yanley gestured him to go on.
"I don't know if your sister told you, but the Lord Holder has decided to invite Master Miranek from Emerald Falls here to deliver the twins." His tone was less than pleased, though he didn't criticize Zathris.
"Yes, we've talked about it," Yanley replied. She could understand Zathris' nervousness and protective attitude.
"Well instead of it now being you and I to deliver the babe, it will be the Master and I." He sincerely hoped that this wouldn't cause a rift in the family, though he wished Yanley's feelings and hard work had been considered-besides his own.
"She might still want me present, as a support person," she said. Yanley had to admit being a little disappointed. She had hoped she could help to deliver her sister's babies.
"Perhaps though I think the room will be a little crowded at that point. Maybe afterwards. I would still like your help, though, until he arrives." He knew she'd been assisting Benani and he hoped it would continue.
"Naturally. You can count on me," Yanley smiled.
"Good and I will still ask for your help if I have any difficult deliveries. It's been very good to have a woman beside me as the women labor. I think it's more soothing for them." Indeed, Yanley's presence had helped to smooth over a lot of recent deliveries and Chupsin was not a fool.
"I love to help," Yanley replied. "I feel I'm doing something useful."
"Where do you feel your skill level is at now?" This was a professional question, since he was wondering if she might feel up to training other midwives at this point.
"I could still use more hands-on practice," Yanley admitted.
"Hmmm have you looked at the schedule to see how many babies are expected?"
He'd glanced at it not too long ago, but couldn't exactly recall.
"It's a bit slow right now, but there should be the usual baby boom in the spring and early summer," Yanley replied. Most babies seemed to get started during the slow winter-months then were born.
"Too right. And we'll have to make sure Zelanka has enough women able to be on their feet during that time, but I guess no sense in worrying about it now. I'll leave you to what you were doing, but I just wanted to talk to you about everything." Grateful this hadn't become the headache he'd feared, he found once more that he did respect Yanley.
"Thank you Chupsin," Yanley replied with a faint smile. The healer was a bit formal to her tastes but otherwise a good man.
