K'sedel

N'vanik gave a nod to his fellow Weyrleader. "K'sedel. How are things
in River Bluff?"

"Pretty good," K'sedel replied even as he held his hand out in greeting.
"You've put on a good show here, Elleth seems to have done well for the
Weyr."

"Very well," N'vanik agreed with a smile and shook K'sedel's hand.
"We're happy to have another breeding gold."

"Aren't we all?" Maybe next time Orlaith would provide River Bluff with a
gold. "We need more young dragons to get us through this pass."

"More old dragons, too," he said with wry humor.

"Some of us have to show the young ones the way," K'sedel said with a
chuckle.

"That's turned out to be a bigger chore than I thought." N'vanik still
had moments where he wondered how he ended up in charge of a Weyr.

"Angdelouth would not have chosen Loseth if she thought the pair of you
could not cope."

"Yeah, well, luckily I can shove the responsibility for these little
ones onto the Weyrlingstaff for a while." Although that was another
problem he had to deal with, since the Weyrlingmaster was on his way
out. At least they had E'ril as a 'Third now.

"And a good Weyrlingsrtaff are worth their weight in marks."

"You're sharding right." N'vanik just couldn't seem to keep them.

"Sometime people don't appreciate the job they do," K'sedel continued.

"I do. I certainly couldn't do it." He didn't have the patience or
temperament to handle weyrlings.

"Me neither, but somehow, they turn out good riders in a short space of
time. And maybe, just maybe, some of them will live through this pass."

"_I_ hope to live through the Pass. I'll be old, but I can make it,"
N'vanik said.

"Some of us will." K'sedel assured him. "And they'll need to keep an eye out
for our families."

"How is your family, by the way?"

"Well Rondera is disappointed again, but she will get through it and stand
again." K'sedel pointed out his granddaughter, her small figure clearly
showing her dismay. "But my youngest is growing like a weed, not sure how
I'll cope when she decides she'll be a candidate."

"How old is she?" N'vanik asked.

"She'll be three at Turnover. So there is plenty of time for Radela to
decide what she wants to do."

"Too early for you to be worrying then," he teased.

"When you're a father you never stop worrying," K'sedel replied in kind,
aware that N'vanik's daughter rode green.

"I suppose, especially when they're flying Thread." N'vanik still
wasn't used to having a daughter, but he did worry about her.

"But the times they make you smile are all worth it."

N'vanik wondered again what it would have been like if he'd known
Cosani as a child. He'd at least been able to see her Impress, though.
"True."

"And maybe we'll have some smiles from these new weyrlings."

"There were certainly plenty of smiles today." A Hatching was such a
happy occasion. Thirty-two new weyrlings now knew the unconditional
love of a dragon.

"But not so many when they have to wake up oh-so-early tomorrow." K'sedel
remembered that first morning, with Nikornath so hungry, and he himself so
tired, yet unable to ignore the needs of the weyrling dragon.

"Tomorrow reality hits them," N'vanik agreed. "Well, I need to keep
making the rounds. Nice talking to you."

"And to you."
