"P'torm is becoming a problem." N'vanik tapped his finger on the desk.
R'enh shifted in his chair across from the Weyrleader. "I don't know
what he's thinking." He shook his head. "Any ideas what you what you
think we should do?" R'enh didn't know the rider's history other than
since he'd been at the Weyr.
"I think I'll give him a strongly worded warning, and if that doesn't
work, I'll ground him for two sevendays and assign him to assist the
healers on Fall days." Maybe that would get through his thick head
that fighting Thread was serious business.
"I hope that's enough," R'enh agreed. "Otherwise, maybe riding sweeps
and messages for a sevenday."
"Punishment for the sake of punishment doesn't always work." Grounding
had worked on him because flying Fall meant so much. The problem with
P'torm was that he wasn't taking it seriously. "If two sevendays
watching injured pairs come back from Fall doesn't work, I'll give him
a month of helping crippled riders."
R'enh nodded. "Right, well you know him better than I do. You just
wonder why now. What happened, you know?"
"The problem is he's not trying to impress us anymore, and he still
thinks he's invincible." Six months out of weyrlinghood. N'vanik
wondered if it was too late to send him back.
"Yeah. Kind of a tough nut to crack."
"I'd like to crack his skull," N'vanik muttered.
"Ok," he said. "What about the feud between L'kril and P'les. The
pranks have to stop. The poor greenrider practically had her hair set
on fire the other afternoon."
"Shards, we need a weyrling wing for adults." N'vanik sighed. "Put
them on transport duty. Sweeps or watch would give them too much time
to think up another prank."
R'enh had a thought. "Maybe if Angdelouth or Panitath grounded them
for a few days they might get some pushback from their dragons the
next time they started plotting?"
N'vanik considered it. "Yeah, it's worth a try. It might also make
them realize how serious this is."
"Exactly," R'enh himself knew what it felt like to be grounded and it
wasn't pretty. Janani and Angdelouth had grounded them once. It
certainly made an impression.
"I'll see if Cyradis is up for it." Then if they had to, they could
escalate it to the Weyrwoman, although he hoped it wouldn't go that
far.
"Alright," he agreed looking at his notes. "Now, I'd like to talk
about Cella and Renessa. I know they're great friends but I think we
have to pull one of them out of G'van's six or put their greens on
different shifts. I'm just afraid they're too distracted trying to
gossip during Fall." He'd already said something to them the past
sevenday and it had held for a few days but then he'd caught them at
it again.
"Put them on different shifts. I don't want to unbalance the Wing,"
N'vanik said.
"Ok," he nodded. "I'll take care of that before the next drill. He
knew exactly who he'd switch and with whom to keep the wing at peak
performance.
"Did you want me to talk to P'torm? If he doesn't straighten up then
he can have 'the talk' from the Weyrleader." R'enh grinned at N'vanik.
There was no need to make him the bad guy at this point.
"Yeah, I'd appreciate it." Not for the first time, N'vanik was glad
he'd picked R'enh as his 'Second.
"Alright," said R'enh. "I will get on that right now." He stood and
went to the door. "You're going to talk to Cyradis though right?" He
just wanted to make sure they were on the same page.
"Yeah, I'll talk to her later today." He had some hidework to drop of
anyway. The hidework never ended.
