Description: Meledei meets a new weyrling and they have a chat.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 6, day 11 of Turn 6
Danna was standing in the middle of the crowded room a thundrestruck
look on her face. She'd only arrived a few days ago, from the furthest
reaches of the Weyr's territory and she'd impressed a dragon! A DRAGON!
And the Weyrbred girl beside her on the sands had not. And what a look
she'd given her! Someone spoke, but Danna's mind was whirling too fast
to hear at first.
"Congratulations." Meledei resisted the urge to poke the girl when she
spoke but she couldn't resist the urge to giggle at that awestruck and
almost lost expression on the girl's face. She had been making rounds,
trying to say congratulations to all the candidates who had Impressed.
"Wha'?" Danna blinked. "Oh I didn't' see ya there! I was thinkin' 'bout
somethin' else!" Then she smiled a big, silly grin.
"I'm sure you were!" Meledei giggled and then asked, "What's her
name?" Of course she had been told, but things had happened so fast
that the names got jumbled up. Not to mention, there was just
something about saying the name of the lifemate who just chose you.
"Zayth! I don't mind telling' ya I didn't know nothin' about dragons
b'fore! I mean I knew they have wings an' flew Thread, but I didn't
know nothin' about living in no Weyr! To think a weyrbred girl didn't
impress an' I did!" Her freckled face hadn't stopped beaming.
"It happens that way sometimes." Meledei was weyrbred and Impressed,
but she knew plenty of candidates who had come from homes and found new
lives when they had lifemates choose them. "Where are you from?"
"You prob'ly never heard of it!" Danna laughed. "it's a tiny mining
camp up in the mountains. It ain't near nothin' an' none but traders
come, mostly. "I ain't never been more than a mile or two away from
it!" Then she froze and frowned slightly. "You're a gold rider, ain't
ya?"
"Yes." Meledei wasn't wearing her knots, but most people knew who she
was. Of course, this girl may not have seen her peeking in on the
candidates and she was kept so busy, she didn't have a chance to get to
know all of them. "I'm Meledei."
"I'm Danna, um, ma'am. Do I have to call you a title or something?" She
hoped she hadn't been rude, but manners weren't the top priority back
home, apart from please and thank you."
"Nah, just call me Meledei." She wasn't really much for titles unless
someone was being disrespectful. And then she _would_ insist on a
title. "Thank you for being so polite. Your parents would be proud.
Are they here?"
Danna sighed. "Nah. No way they could get here. They wouldn't go on no
dragon. Too high up." She shrugged. "I'll send them word somehow." She
looked uncertain.
"Well, you can always send a messenger, or borrow someone's
firelizard." Meledei offered as suggestions. "I'm sure they'll be
happy to hear you Impressed."
Danna nodded happily. "They will be. Thank you." She paused for a
moment, listening intently to something. She grinned and nodded. "I'm
sorry, Zayth needs me and I shouldn't take up no more of your time.
Good evening Meledei." she gave a very ungraceful curtsy and
disappeared into the crowds.
Meledei stared after the young greenrider and her sudden departure.
She shook her head and turned to make her rounds to the rest
of the new weyrlings.
