Alivya paused in the corridor outside the infirmary. She'd been there three times already but hadn't gone in. He'd either not been there or had had other people there with him and she really wanted to see Chupsin. She'd taken all the seeds he'd given her, following his directions dutifully and precisely. It hadn't been easy, there were few places to hide such things in a small cot with so many people in it. But she'd taken them all so she knew she could not be with child. And yet, for the last sevenday she'd been incredibly ill. All day, everyday. Nothing she ate would stay down. She assumed it would pass but it didn't and so here she was. She looked in and saw him there, alone. She stepped inside. "Excuse me Healer Chupsin," she said softly.
He turned and saw her and his eyes rounded just slightly, but he controlled himself. "Aye Alivya, how can I help you?" His apprentices were somewhere in the workspace and he sure as shells didn't want them to hear anything they didn't need to.
She was pale, she could feel it and a bit unsteady on her feet because she hadn't really eaten for a sevenday. She put her hand on the doorframe to steady herself and licked her lips nervously. She couldn't look him in the eyes, but if she lowered hers she saw his hands and remembered them... "I've been feeling unwell." She stepped inside, not wanting to be overheard while she talked about embarrassing bodily functions. "I can't seem to keep any food down. I keep," her voice dropped to a whisper "vomiting.
At first, he didn't panic. She could be sick for several reasons of course. Chupsin nodded and brought her into a small examination cubicle. "Just vomiting then? I can give you something for that."
"I've been feeling tired, but I haven't really been able to eat, so that would make sense, wouldn't it?" She looked uncertain, but then she wasn't the healer!
"Aye, if you're not eating, your blood will get low and it'll make you tired. You'll also be missing nutrients that you need for energy." Picking up his usual tools, he moved toward her. "Open your mouth please." A quick look inside to make sure her throat wasn't infected or something of that sort.
She dutifully opened her mouth but had to resist the urge to gag. It was difficult enough at the best of times but today it was much worse. She wouldn't embarrass him by being sick on him! So she concentrated on trying to ignore his proximity and the shame she felt at such thoughts.
Her throat looked normal, though slightly irritated which would be caused by the vomiting. No signs of infection or swelling. He pulled back and let her close her mouth. There were times he wished he had access to dolphins here since they could see abdominal obstructions and problems inside that he couldn't. "Doesn't seem to be any infection. How long has this been going on?"
"About a sevenday, maybe a little longer..." She looked thoughtful. "I thought it would have gone by now but my brothers and sisters always have some kind of virus or other at this time of turn." She shrugged lightly. "Maybe I got it from one and then another."
That was more of a problem. Usually nausea never lasted that long. Of course there was a possibility, but he'd given her the seeds. **If she didn't take them..** Feeling himself get angry because he should have known better, he knew he had to check. "I'm going to need you to get on the table please and it'd be easier if you pulled up your skirts or took them off."
She took the first option, for the sake of modesty and because the latter would only serve as a reminder of what she'd done. She lay still and stared at the ceiling.
He took his time cleaning his hands then walked over and sat on the stool. Using his hands to feel for any tell tale signs, he finished up then washed his hands again. Grabbing the tube he used to listen, he brought it to her belly, thus confirming what he already suspected. He was fecked. Even if she was a little hussy and it was another man's baby, he had been there first so he would be blamed.
His hands were shaking as he leaned against the table, thinking about what he might do. "Alivya, you're pregnant."
What blood was left in her face drained away as her head swung around to stare at him in horror. "But...but, no, I took all the seeds like you told me to! I swear I did!" She started to tremble from head to toe and her eyes filled with water. In that moment all her fantasies of being Searched or finding a craft that would take women burst like a soap bubble.
"Don't lie to me. Have you been with anyone else?" His face was hard as he began to consider the situation and just what he might do.
She sat up now, trembles turned to shaking. "No!" She was aghast. She'd been killing herself inside as it was without making it so much worse. "No! Why would I? I feel bad enough about what I've done!" Tears poured down her face and the last word came out as a sob. This was all her fault. She shouldn't have been out by herself in the first place, shouldn't have gone back to his rooms and should have listened to her upbringing and not let anything happened until she was married. She buried her face in her hands and wept. "I'm so sorry!"
He sighed. She didn't seem smart enough or experienced enough to lie. If that were the case, then it was likely his child. Chupsin was a lot of things but he would never leave a child of his unprovided for. He was also holdbred, despite everything he'd experienced since then. He watched her quietly for a moment. She wasn't the perfect mate he'd wished for. She was simple, for one thing. However, she could be taught easily and she wouldn't fight him. He couldn't leave her out in the cold since that meant problems from her father and that could harm his professional reputation, though one had nothing to do with the other.
At the end of all of these considerations, he also considered that she obviously could have his children. Smirking, he scratched his chin. "Shh or everyone is going to hear you for Faranth's sake. Now listen. We're going to wait for a little bit and make sure things progress. I want to make sure you don't lose this baby. Then, we'll have a harper marry us and be done with it." He came toward her, placing a hand curiously on her abdomen. "And I know I don't have to tell you what your father would say if you told him."
She lowered her hands and stared at him, her eyes red. "He would be so disappointed," that was an understatement. He loved her, but she couldn't guarantee another night under his roof if he found out. "Won't people notice that it comes before 9 months?"
"Won't matter. At that point, we'll be married anyway and you'll be under my protection. Besides, sometimes children come early." Chupsin knew there had been many who had gotten married after there was a baby involved. After all, he was the one who usually told them about the baby. Those things weren't spoken about, however.
"Oh..." She hadn't thought of that. She wondered if other people did the same. "What...what do I do now?" She looked down at his hand on her belly. It didn't seem real. There was a tiny little person in there. His child.
"Don't say anything to anyone just yet. As I said, we need to make sure it will be viable. Come back to see me in a month and if everything's as it is, we'll arrange to be married." He thought about that. There was a small kernel of displeasure at the thought but there was also a good feeling of anticipation. Cursing himself and his baser natures, he pulled his hand away. "I'm going to give you something to help with the vomiting. Usually it stops after awhile." He thought of Kaya and wondered if Alivya might lose hers as well.
She looked back at him. She wondered if maybe he'd wish she'd lose it, so he wouldn't have to marry her. She thought about what she could do to be rid of it, but she knew she wouldn't dare. She could run away, but she wouldn't do that anyway. This was her home. "All right, I'll do as you say", as if she'd do anything less!
Of course no one else was looking and he just couldn't help himself. Chupsin put his head near hers and kissed her. When he was done, he licked his lips and went into the cabinet for the herbs. "Here's what you'll need for the vomiting. Try to eat, just small amounts and nothing that will upset you."
She nodded and took the herbs, hoping she'd keep them down.
