After the hatching was over, she went to the feast and danced and
finally took a seat at one of the higher tables. Her eyes followed N'vanik
as he mingled and did whatever else he needed to do as Weyrleader
at the hatching. Someone thoughtfully set a plate of cheese in front
of her and she leaned back and nibbled.
N'vanik had gotten better at the social aspects of being a Weyrleader,
but he still didn't like small talk. As soon as he could, he broke
away and headed toward Rhosyn. "Trying to avoid getting wine thrown
on you again?" he asked with a teasing smile.
"You noticed that, did you?" She grinned. Swallowing, she looked around
at the other people then came back to him. "I'd like to avoid having to hear the Aunties fuss this time. Anyway, Meledei should have her glory. And R'enh." Proud of her friend, she put a hand on N'vanik's shoulder. "You'll have more eggs now. More breeding golds."
He nodded, smiling. "The Weyr is finally back on its feet."
"And you can stop worrying so much." She angled a piece of cheese toward
his mouth. Rhosyn was glad that N'vanik had less on his mind these days.
She was reluctant to ask about the whole Janani thing which was a big fat
runner in the room, but she didn't bring it up. "Orlaith has decided she'll lay enough eggs for all of Pern if I'll let her."
He leaned closer to take the cheese she offered. Good stuff. He swallowed
before laughing. "I don't think she has to work that hard. There _are_ other queens."
"Oh aye, there are. They just aren't _her_. I don't like being on the ground, though, so I'm happy enough when I don't have to worry about flights." Rhosyn was sure her queen would do her duty to the Weyr, though.
"Glad I don't have to deal with that. It drives me nuts when I'm
grounded." N'vanik took a piece of cheese from her plate.
"Part of the whole being a goldrider thing," she quipped. It had its
good and its bad, but she would never trade her queen for the world. Finishing off the last of the cheese, she sat back in her chair. "Speaking of which, tell me about your new one."
"Cyradis," he said. "Seems like a serious type, but that might be what
we need around here. Janani needs help with hidework and such, and
Meledei could use another mentor."
"MMMmmmm....she seems to be doing well enough from what I can see."
Rhosyn wouldn't let her loose just yet after only her first hatching, but she thought Meledei had a good head on her shoulders.
"Meledei is great, but her training wasn't what it should have been. She
deserved better."
In her mind, she heard herself say, "I did too." Rhosyn started to remember, but she didn't want to. She hadn't gotten what she should have, but she had done allright, hadn't she?
He glanced out at the dancing square, where Meledei was taking a turn
with yet another dance partner. "She looks like she was born for this."
"Where did she come from?" In her mind, she couldn't remember those details. She also wondered just how well N'vanik knew the younger rider.
"Here. She was born at the Weyrhold before the earthquake. Lost her
mother in it."
"Ahh...Weyrbred then. That's a rarity." Rhosyn had never experienced and earthquake but she imagined it would be a frightening thing. To come through that..Meledei was definitely good stock with potential. "Let's
pick a less depressing subject, shall we?"
He gave a short laugh. "Didn't mean to head down that way. Meledei
Impressed from Loseth's first clutch, and now Elleth has hatchlings of
her own. Kind of amazing."
"Loseth is an old man now," Rhosyn chuckled as she thought about all the
hatchlings Orlaith had brought into the world. It was staggering when it was considered really. "You're making me feel old too. New subject-again." Bringing the glass to her lips, she took a drink of the good tasting wine.
"Alright. How are things on your side of the world?"
"Well..my hears-all is pregnant by the Master dragonhealer. I have weyrlings running around. I also quite enjoyed myself at the gather. It turned out pretty nice." Walking the stalls, dancing, enjoying the food, and watching the fireworks had given her time to relax away from her duties.
He arched an eyebrow at that first bit of news, then got distracted at
her mention of the gather. "The one at Sunstone? I made an appearance
but I ducked out after a bit."
"Yeah, it was nice with the fireworks and all. The food was good and there
was dancing and music. I also got to pick up a few things." She reached under the table to pull up her carisak. Reaching inside, she pulled out a
box and handed it to him.
"You got me a present?" He opened the box to find a book, old but well
cared for. "Thanks." He gave her a smile and ran his fingers over the
cover. "Someone was selling books there? Shards, I should've looked
around more."
"They had a lot of things." She watched his face, wondering if it was
something he'd like. When he smiled, Rhosyn found herself doing it too.
Just like the dress, she had wanted to please him with this. It wasn't much
but she had carefully made the choice. "Do you like it?"
"Yeah." He leaned close and kissed her.
Enjoying the contact, she was quiet as she returned the kiss. When some
time had passed, she pulled back just a bit, licking her lips. "You taste like cheese." A small smile came over her face and she leaned in to kiss him again.
He put an arm around her waist as the kiss stretched on. Finally he
leaned back. "So do you. Cheese and wine."
