Description: Kielya's first day with her new foster mother is a bit stressful.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 6, day 7 of Turn 6
The door opened to reveal several children shrieking and chasing each
other around a living area in some sort of game. K'deren picked out
his daughter Deralie, and her older brother Trievan with practiced
ease.
"You two have fun today?" he asked them as they ran over to greet him.
"Not cause your foster mother too much grief did you?"
Deralie shook her head, but Trievan answered. "She did, she's new," he
said pointing to a girl K'deren didn't recognize. "Think her name's
Keilya."
"NO," rang out the young girls voice. "I don't want to!" She was very
emphatic and stomped her foot for emphasis. "And you can't make me."
K'deren turned to see what the problem was.
"She's loud!" Deralie said, hands going to cover her ears. "I don't like
it."
"Maybe we need to let your fostermother calm things down?" K'deren
hoped she would take that action, the youngster seemed unhappy about
something, but it really wasn't his place to jump in and sort it out.
Although the little girls mother had told her this might happen she
was at the end of her patience. "Keilya, we _have_ to unpack your
things and get them put away. You will be staying here with me now."
"Nooooo," wailed the young girl and slumped into a sobbing heap on top
of her small bags.
Cyradis had come to check on her daughter during a break in her round
of meetings and unpacking herself. She heard the mournful sounds from
the hallway and swept into the room with an apologetic look for the
adults in the room.
"Keilya," she said gently and dropped down next to the sad pile
pulling her sobbing child into her arms.
"Is she okay?" asked K'deren gently.
Cyradis turned sad eyes to the tall rider and made a rather
noncommittal tilt of her head. "Baby," she turned her attention back
to the little girl. "I know you miss Loradis but I'm sure..." she
looked up at the rider for help with the foster mother's name.
"Varila," he supplied.
"Varila," she repeated. "I'm sure you'll find that Varila with care
for you as as well and you will be comfortable and happy here."
She looked up as the woman came over. "I'm sorry," she said softly.
The foster mother shook her head. "Nothing to be sorry about Ma'am. It's
been a big day for her to move here and it'll take a little while for her to
get used to it. But if there is anything I can do that might help her settle
in?"
"Maybe she should stay with me for a few nights and come here during
the day until she becomes more comfortable?" She didn't want to usurp
the foster mothers rights or maneuver around something she was trying
to teach.
"Let her try one night here, and then we'll see how she gets on," suggested
Varila. "It isn't as though you'd be hard to find if she needs you."
"Alright," she smiled at the woman. "See honey? Isn't that nice?
Varila says it will be easy to find me and look at the new friends you
have here." She looked over at the boy and girl with the brownrider.
Kielya peeked out from where her face had been hidden in her mother's
shoulder. Truth be told she'd only wanted to make sure her ma was
still here.
"Now why don't you go with Varila and put your things up?"
Kielya nodded still a little bit sullen but took her new foster
mothers hand and went with her.
Cyradis stood and watched her go. "I'm sorry, she's had a rough Turn."
"You two go and help her, okay," K'deren said to Trievan and Deralie, "We'll
go and get something to eat when everyone is sorted out." He shooed them
away before turning back to the Goldrider. "No worse than these two have
been through," he said softly, aware little ears might just be listening in.
"The bad parts of being a rider's child can sometimes be a lot for young
ones to deal with."
"Yes it certainly can." She nodded her own depth of understanding.
"For adults as well."
"All we can do is make sure they know the good things as well. And
sometimes, that can be as simple as a smile." Which he did. "I'm K'deren,
Donneth's rider and Cyclone Wingsecond," he said by way of introduction.
"The troublemakers I sent to help your daughter are Trievan and Deralie."
"Well met K'deren," she said offering her hand. "I'm Cyradis the new
Weyrwoman's Second. Keilya is the youngest of my brood but the only
one here with me at the moment."
"I'm sure she'll settle soon," came the reply as he offered his hand in
return.
"I know you're probably right." She gave his hand a gentle squeeze and
froze a moment looking up at the brownrider. Then the moment passed
and she released his hand rubbing the palm down the front of her
skirt. She refocused with difficulty on the children's voices but all
she heard was chatter and giggles. Nothing to indicate the return of
Kielya's tears.
"Sounds like all is well for now."
"I hope so," another smile followed. "Although I need to take those two to
get something to eat before they drive everyone even more crazy than they
already are."
She smiled and shrugged. "That's just the way children are. I don't
imagine we were much different at their age. Believe me, there were
_lots_ of places to make mischief at the Vintner Hall."
"And at a Weyrhold too."
"Yes," she chuckled "I'm sure they take after you." She could see the
resemblance to the tall brownrider in the little girl though not so
much in the boy. "My own boys were the bane of the cooks existence as
weyrbrats."
"Mine will be too, given another turn or so."
"Da! Hungry!" Deralie came over shouting her need. "Sssh sweetheart, we'll
just say bye to our new friends and then we'll go eat, okay?"
"Ah," she smiled down at the girl. "There's your cue." She was about
to turn and go into the room with her daughter and her new foster
mother when she thought better of it. Right now it was probably best
for her to sneak away and let Kielya settle into her new relationship.
"I should probably go too."
"But I'm sure we'll all see you around here." K'deren smiled again. "Welcome
to Dolphin Cove," he said.
"I'm sure we will Wingsecond," she smiled. "You have a nice dinner,"
she said to the little girl and then to her father, "It's been a
pleasure."
