Prenatal Checkup

Writers: AL, Chelle
Date Posted: 12th January 2012

Characters: Chupsin, Kaya
Description: Chupsin examines Kaya and tries to alleviate her problems as her pregnancy progresses.
Location: Amber Hills Hold
Date: month 5, day 20 of Turn 6

The apprentices readied the exam room. With so many women pregnant since
there wasn't much else to do during the colder months, the infirmary was
busy. Chupsin had to see them periodically even if there weren't
complications. Glad he had help at least in some of the midwives he had
trained, the healer looked down at his list. The steward's wife's name
was there. It was time for her to come in again then.

Kaya was, of course, on time. She didn't like these visits. Of course,
she didn't like the fact that she was _pregnant_, but there was nothing
she could do about that save for a hop on a dragon. And that wasn't
something she was willing to do. It wasn't the baby's fault. It was
_his_ fault. With a sigh, the steward's wife made her way into the
infirmary and hoped it wasn't a long wait.

An apprentice saw her and led her in, allowing her to prepare herself
before the healer arrived. "Are you ready, lady Kaya?" Having learned
she was minor hold blood, Chupsin had started to use her title when
he saw her. Standing outside the curtain, he waited to hear her.

"I'm ready." As ready as she ever would be. Kaya wasn't really _ready_.
Not for a baby. Not for the way her life was going to change. She was
ready to leave, to get out, but she was not in any position to do so any
time soon.

He walked inside and then began to ready himself. "You know the routine
so this isn't going to be anything new. Any changes to note before I get
you ready?"

"Nothing. Except I'm still sick all the time." Kaya ate when she
could, small meals and often, but she still threw it up half the time.
She was really hating the pregnancy more and more as time passed.

"Any less than before though or are you still not getting any
nutrition?" That did concern him. "What are you trying to eat?"

"I'm trying to eat whatever will stay down. I try different things.
Some work better than others. Tubers seem to be all right. Meat...not
so much." Kaya could eat a tiny amount, but not much at all. "It's
not less. A little more, but not much."

"Hmm..and you tried what I gave you? All right instead of that let's
do something else a little stronger." He made a note to give her some
of the powder she could mix into water to drink before eating.

"Well, let's have a look and get this done then," he said before he
started the examination, working through it as quickly as he could.
Everything seemed normal and Chupsin finished, turning to clean
his hands. "I'm done. You can sit up now."

Shards, she hated that part of checkups! It was so degrading and
embarrassing. Kaya didn't waste any time getting up and covering
herself - which only sent a bout of nausea through her. Thankfully she
didn't have anything in her stomach so all she did was reel and turn a
little green.

He heard the noise. Used to it, he turned quickly to hand her the small
bucket kept for just such an occasion. "Are you okay?" He spoke loudly
for an apprentice to go get some of that powder he wanted.

"Yeah." Thankfully nothing came up - not that there was anything _to_
come up. "Just...still feeling sick." Kaya admitted, grateful that
she didn't actually throw up and get herself all nasty - not to mention
it would have been humiliating to do so in front of the healer!

In actuality, Chupsin was covered in fluids much more often than anyone
would think. He didn't flinch, though he did prefer it didn't come into
contact with his face. "Move a bit slower. If you need to, close your
eyes for a little bit, breathe, then when you feel the world stop
moving, open them again."

"All right." Kaya did as she was told and opened her eyes when the
feeling passed. She managed a weak, if embarrassed, smile. "Thank
you." She managed. Now if only he'd leave so she could get dressed
and get _out_ of there!

"No problem. Glad everything is progressing. I'm going to go now but
the apprentice should give you some of that powder before you leave.
Mix it with water and drink in the morning and the evening." He headed
out of the room, allowing her privacy.

Kaya got dressed and procured the mix. She really hoped it helped.
She was so tired of being sick - and pregnant. Shards, she'd be glad
when it was all over!
